TV Guide's Matt Roush addresses Moonlight's upcoming hiatus

Ever since I reported that CBS plans to change their Friday night line up and give Moonlight a holiday, I have received tons of messages of protest. I'm not the only one. I bet that the CBS mailbox is overflowing with protests from loyal Moonlight fans! TV Guide's Matt Roush answered a question about this touchy subject in his Ask Matt column. It is great to see that even he hopes for Moonlight's renewal :)

Question :

Do you have any idea what is going on with the CBS series Moonlight? I have just read a rather distressing article saying that it's going on hiatus in February to be replaced by The Price Is Right. Many of us Moonlight fans are obsessing over whether it is indeed going to return after the strike is resolved. And why would CBS not continue to air repeats in lieu of a game show? Many of us were looking forward to reruns, we are so addicted to this show. As a loyal TV Guide subscriber for many years, any information or light you can shed on this topic would be greatly appreciated.— Valerie

Matt Roush :

Stop obsessing. During this topsy-turvy strike season, almost nothing means anything where scheduling is concerned. The current dilemma for network schedulers is how to keep as much of the lineup as fresh as possible, and now is not the time to get all snarky about the relative freshness of The Price Is Right, which is clearly meant only to be a place-holder on what's already a ratings-starved night. The other network challenge is to decide which shows will stay in repeat mode and which will be rested until there are new episodes. CBS is unusually fortunate in having a lot of shows (the CSI/NCIS-style procedural) that repeat well. But Moonlight, being a serialized supernatural romance thriller, is probably not one of them. The argument here is whether it does more harm than good to keep repeating the same few episodes over and over again. The most rabid fans no doubt will disagree with CBS' call, but I get the reasoning behind it. And I see no reason yet to doubt CBS' intent to bring the show back later in the season, whether in repeats or (let's hope) originals.

New Alex O'Loughlin interview in Starlog Magazine's March issue

Starlog Magazine has a new interview with Alex O'Loughlin :) It is featured in their March 2008 issue. They spoke to Alex while filming was still in progress on the series.

Sophia always has such lovely things to say about Alex in her interviews. He returns the favor describing her as smart, talented and beautiful. Jason also receives kind words from Alex... who says Josef is his favorite Moonlight character.

I like knowing that putting in the teeth & contacts makes him feel transformed. "It completely shifts me away from who I am. Mick St. John as a normal guy, before he vamps, is one character, but Mick St. John in full vamp is another beast altogether!” Amen to that, Alex!

Dark-Red Detective
The Inner Monster by Bill Florence
Starlog ~ America's SciFi Magazine ~ March #363

It’s Moonlight time when Alex O’Loughlin patrols the shadows as LA’s latest vampire detective.

Alex O’Loughlin has been a fan of the vampire mythos for as long as he can remember, which makes his role as bloodsucker private eye Mick St. John on the CBS series Moonlight a perfect fit.

“I’ve always loved the idea of vampires and immortality,” the Australian O’Loughlin says during a rare break on the set. “I love The Lost Boys and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the work of Anne Rice. I don’t know if I would want to be immortal, but the thought of the infinite excites me. It also haunts me, in a way. My father, who teaches physics and astronomy, has given me ideas about the expanse of the universe that have haunted me for years and made me get in touch with my own mortality.”

In Moonlight, Mick relies on his special skills as a vampire to tackle crimes involving both the living and the undead. O’Loughlin, 32, was drawn to the series by not only its vampire motif, but also because of the strength of the show’s pilot script, which the actor says was particularly well-developed.

“I read a bunch of pilots,” he relates, “Good writing stands out easily from bad writing every time. The more material you read, the more quickly good stuff jumps off the page at you. The Moonlight pilot had a great script that was well-constructed and balanced. The concept was really cool, and the characters were already fully developed. I understood Mick St. John, his motivations and where he comes from morally and spiritually. When you have an understanding of a character as quickly as I did, you know you can get down to the important work sooner rather than later.”

The actor was gratified to find that subsequent episodes maintained the same integrity. “I feel the show is getting better and better,” he declares. “The difficult thing about the pilot was establishing our mythology and our rules. There was a good deal of exposition for the audience to digest before we could move into the storyline. I think we did that pretty successfully in 44 minutes, but the nice thing about moving away from the pilot was that we could start to focus on specifics.”

Night Patrols

O’Loughlin says he and his alter-ego share a common understanding of irony, which is “a big foothold for me into the character. Mick has a dark sense of humor, too, which I really like. But beyond that, he and I are quite different. Mick is tougher than I am, and probably a little smarter, too. I’m just a guy who’s lucky enough to do what he enjoys for a living.”

“I think I’m more gregarious than he is. Mick is much more alienated from the world than I am. I have lots of friends and loved ones that I spend time with. Even though he’s a humanist, Mick doesn’t necessarily like people. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but the fact is, Mick is a loner, and I, myself, am not.” Chuckling, O’Loughlin adds, “It helps that I can go out much more in the daylight than he can. I can go to the beach - and it won’t kill me!”

Imbuing characters with inner conflict is key to making them interesting, O’Loughlin maintains, and the outwardly cool, internally tortured Mick is a perfect example. “He’s enormously conflicted. He’s a monster who is terrified of the monster within himself,” O’Loughlin reflects. “Mick is a relentless vampire who is, at the same time, a humanist. He hates what he is. Mick is in a perpetual state of highly controlled denial about his vampire nature. He became a private investigator to rid society of predators like himself. Mick feels that each predator he gets rid of gets him closer to his former humanity, but unfortunately, that’s not necessarily the case. Even though he appears controlled and graceful most of the time, he’s in utter turmoil.”

A big part of the problem for Mick is that he’s in love with a mortal woman, reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles) - a love that, while not unrequited, is fraught with complications. Mick has been watching over Beth ever since he saved her from a dire mishap when she was a little girl. Now, she’s an adult - and his peer - which changes the nature of his feelings for her. Unfortunately, the last woman Mick loved, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), turned him into a vampire on their wedding night. So Mick is a little leery of getting too close to Beth. He’s afraid she’ll get hurt - maybe even at his hands. And if he does manage to resist turning her into a vampire like himself, the passage of time will ultimately tear them apart. What’s more, Beth already has a boy friend, Josh (Jordan Belfi).

Moonlight surprised many viewers, and O’Loughlin himself, by having Beth learn that Mick is a vampire in just the second episode, Out of the Past. “That was a shock to me, initially,” O’Loughlin admits. “No one told me that was coming. I read the script, and I was like, ‘Wow, you guys have made some pretty big decisions in the writing department!’ I would say that episode is probably my favorite to date, along with the fourth one, Fever. The climax of Out of the Past where Beth learns Mick’s secret, was enormous for me. It was really exciting how she finds him, and he has no choice but to show her what he really is.”

“We’re on episode nine right now, and I’ve realized that Mick’s revelation in number two has shortened the process for us to get to important plot issues, which are coming your way soon. Beth’s discovery of Mick’s true nature also raises the stakes in a way. Yeah, the cat’s out of the bag, but now there’s new drama and new conflict for Mick. Beth knows this much; now, she wants to know more. Where does it stop? Soon, she’ll want to participate in his adventures. The revelation definitely complicates things.”

Night Shoots

Many feel that Moonlight’s strength, at least in the early episodes, lies in the sizzling on-screen chemistry between Mick and Beth. O’Loughlin acknowledges the point, and says working with Myles is as effortless as it is enjoyable. “Sophia and I have a fantastic chemistry on screen, and we’re great friends outside of work, too,” he proclaims. “She’s amazingly talented, smart and, of course, beautiful. Sophia is an avid professional who brings so much to the character of Beth. It’s truly a pleasure to work with her. She doesn’t mess around. Sophia is always prepared.”

“The chemistry between the two of us is an absolutely key element to the show’s success. Sometimes you put two people on screen together, and there’s nothing much going on. But sometimes people pair really well together, and I think that’s the case with us. Again, it’s complicated, because Mick has gone from a paternal role with Beth to a sexual, romantic role. And there’s another layer of conflict for him - and for Beth eventually - if she ever finds out the true nature of his presence in her life.”

Interestingly, O’Loughlin says the vampire Josef (Jason Dohring) is “my favorite character on the show. I really enjoy Jason as an actor, and as a person, too. He brings to Moonlight a touch of comic relief and a different feel. There’s a little shift of gears every time he’s on that helps me push through from one episode to the next. I love how Josef is so unashamedly hedonistic. He has been around for so long and done so much. Josef has been to so many different countries, he has fed on countless people and slept with countless women, and he just doesn’t have anything left to prove. I think he’s hilarious.”

“Josef has a strange set of morals - well, he doesn’t really have any morals at all. Call it a strange set of beliefs for getting through life. And he’s getting through life just fine. Even though he conflicts with Mick almost all the time, they’re still best buddies. In fact, they’re important allies for one another. Neither one could ever dream of not having the other in his life, because they’re essentially each other’s only true friend.”

Despite the great time O’Loughlin is having making Moonlight, working as the lead in a TV series isn’t without its hardships. Asked what has been especially challenging so far, he pauses a moment and when the answer comes, it’s hardly surprising. “The hours,” he replies. “The workload and the pressure are quite challenging. I’ve come to the conclusion that I will never work harder than this as an actor - unless I’m doing a war film for Oliver Stone somewhere in the Vietnamese jungle, it’s boot camp and he’s making me sleep in the trees and not allowing me to eat at all.”

“I think this is about as hard as it gets. You know, we do have trailers and great food and all the rest of it, but the hours are pretty enormous. This past weekend, for example, I got home at about 8:45 AM on Saturday, then had to be back on the set at 5:45 AM Monday. I spent most of that free time catching up on sleep. It’s crazy. I find myself sleeping in a corner of the studio from time to time, just to catch 20 minutes here and there.”

By comparison, working with Moonlight’s special FX is no big deal. “The vampire eyes are contact lenses, and the vampire teeth are molds made to impressions of my own mouth,” O’Loughlin explains. “The teeth snap in and out pretty easily, and they’re extremely realistic. I do go through them, though. Occasionally, I get pretty heavily into character, and I’ll bite down on them, or I’ll get punched in the mouth or fall on my face and break them.”

“It takes me about an hour to get into full vamp mode,” O’Loughlin continues. “When we do the morphing on-screen, that’s a process which involves greenscreen and slates both with and without me, and I have to keep the same position. It’s pretty standard procedure for the show to morph me from normal to vamp, but it’s time-consuming. As the actor, I have to remain patient and let everyone fuss about and do their job frantically around me, while I stay in character and in the moment. But I’ll tell you, mate, once I put those teeth and eyes in, it’s like I’m wearing a mask. It completely shifts me away from who I am. Mick St. John as a normal guy, before he vamps, is one character, but Mick St. John in full vamp is another beast altogether!”

Night Moves

O’Loughlin has only been acting in film and TV since 2004, but Moonlight isn’t his first turn in a genre project. In 2005, he co-starred in Man-Thing, a poorly received movie adaptation of the Marvel comic. “[Director] Brett Leonard is a friend of mine,” O’Loughlin states. “He’s a very passionate filmmaker who makes a certain kind of movie for a certain kind of audience. He takes a film that you really need x amount of money to make, and he makes it for half or a quarter of that.”

“The bottom line is : There are certain things you need to have money for, like good music and good production values. Man-Thing was one of those films that needed to be bigger. It probably needed a [big-name] star as well. Having said that, we also didn’t have the greatest script. It was about a swamp creature, and we didn’t have enough money to do it right. But I don’t worry about it. That was my first sort of ‘big’ feature.”

That same year, O’Loughlin landed a role in the critically acclaimed Australian mini-series The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, a biopic about one of the first successful escapees from the Australian penal colony in the late 1700s. While not SF, the project - which also starred Romola Garai, Sam Neill and Jack Davenport - left an indelible mark on O’Loughlin, who earned a Best Lead Actor nomination from the Australian Film Institute.

“That was a wonderful learning experience,” he remarks. “It was a tough shoot, mate: four months on the water, with children, in the Australian sun, in convict boats, and wearing convict clothes. We pulled out all the stops. It was wonderful being part of something that actually happened. I tried to do a huge amount of research on my character, Will Bryant, but I hardly got anywhere with it, because there’s very little information about him out there. My main concern was that I was representing someone who was a real person, and I wanted to bring a voice and a heart and a brain to him. Not too many people in America have seen that show.”

As O’Loughlin prepares to return to the Moonlight set, the subject of his flawless American accent on the show comes up. “I’ve always been fascinated with accents, ever since I was a kid,” he attests. “I grew up with American television, and I’ve lived in LA for a number of years now, so it isn’t that hard. But I constantly work on it.”

So what’s going to keep viewers turning in to Moonlight each week? “The show has lots of integrity,” Alex O’Loughlin sums up. “The approach we’re taking is that it’s a human show that just happens to be full of vampires. I care about these characters, and the more people tune in and stick around, the more they’ll care too.”

Also in the March issue... there is an interview with Alex's fellow Aussie Actor, Yvonne Strahovski, about the new tv program Chuck... a piece about Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles... an article about the soon to premiere Fox show, New Amsterdam.... they talk to Kevin McKidd, from NBC's Journeyman, about the series and the possibility of it being cancelled.... Reaper... Battlestar Galactica and much more. Television is not their only interest. Movies are also discussed, including an interivew with Tim Burton about Sweeney Todd. Starlog is a really great magazine!

Moonlight to premiere on television in England!

Moonlight has been picked up by the Living television network in the UK. Sophia Myles will be seen by her home audience. :) Let's hope they treat her well.

I like the blurb Living has on the main page of its website about our show.....

"A handsome vampire who doesn't want to suck our blood and a foxy internet investigative reporter - yes, Moonlight does sound tasty!"

They did a nice little write up about the program to get their viewers ready.

Recently voted Best New TV Drama by The People's Choice Awards 2008 in the US, Moonlight is already leaving its mark on US viewers and arrives on LIVING this February.

Private Investigator Mick St John (Alex O'Loughlin, The Shield) is a vampire who ironically makes it his mission to help people, rather than adhere to the usual vampiric tendencies. Teaming up with beautiful and tenacious reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles, Hallam Foe, Doctor Who), Mick makes it his mission to uncover murders and mysteries and protect the innocent. Garlic and ornate crucifixes are no match for this modern-day vampire; a stake through the heart will only render a vampire paralyzed... but only until someone kindly removes it.

In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick St John was bitten 55 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline, (Shannyn Sossoman, A Knight's Tale), on their wedding night. Forever 30 years of age, Mick is as handsome and charismatic as the day he was 'turned'. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring, Veronica Mars), a 400 year old vampire hedge-fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living, including beautiful, ambitious Internet investigative reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles).

But, unbeknownst to Beth, she has met Mick before. One night many years ago, Mick saved her from being kidnapped by Coraline as a young girl, making him realise he wanted to use his powers for good, not evil. Now their paths cross again, and Mick feels a distinctive bond with Beth, who has grown into a beautiful, courageous woman. Mick knows he can't pursue his feelings without exposing the part of him that would make him a monster in Beth's eyes.

As he lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.

MOONLIGHT, sinking its teeth into LIVING this February.

Moonlight premieres in England on Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 at 10:00 PM on the Living Channel.

Entertainment Weekly's Pop Watch Blog asks if Moonlight should return

Entertainment Weekly's Mandi Bierly brings up the subject of Moonlight on their Pop Watch Blog. She asks ~ "Should the show return?" Leave your comment and answer her question. Moonlight fans know that Moonlight deserves to be renewed by CBS!

Mandi wrote ~

In case I'm not the only one watching CBS' vampire drama Moonlight, I'll warn you that I'm about to talk about the plot of last Friday's episode. Bolt now if you must...

Okay, so full disclosure: I haven't always watched Moonlight. I intended to when it premiered last fall, but by the time I got around to it, the handful of people I knew tuning in had stopped. Then I spent a few Friday nights at home, and was too lazy to turn the channel after watching David Conrad on Ghost Whisperer, so I finally saw it. It was right around the time that Mick (Alex O'Loughlin) first discovered his ex-wife, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) — the vamp who sired him and whom he supposedly killed the night he saved Beth (Sophia Myles) — was possibly now a human and working as a freelance photographer. Yes, I wish Moonlight was as well written as Buffy and Angel, but who isn't fascinated by the idea of a vamp becoming human?

After some back-and-forthing, we found out on Friday's episode that Coraline's "cure" is a temporary one, first used by her family and others who wanted to escape the guillotine. (We also learned that vampires were the target of the Reign of Terror.) The episode ended with Mick sampling the cure, and, after getting his ass kicked by Coraline's brother and gorging himself on food, showing up at Beth's boyfriend's funeral to reveal his momentary mortality.

So, here's my question to you folks who've been tuning in: Is this the start of a great story arc — Mick is human, what will it mean for his relationship with Beth, how long will it last, etc. — or a fine place to call it quits? Moonlight won the People's Choice Award for best new drama, but we all know that means nothing — and it looks like Friday's episode was the last one canned before the strike.

Should the show return?

I used a photo of Mick protecting Beth (from Sleeping Beauty ~ episode #1x10) because it is appropriate to this subject. We need to protect our show! Have you written &/or called CBS lately?

CBS releases video of Mick and Coraline fighting Lance in The Mortal Cure (episode #1x12)

CBS has released this video of Mick and Coraline fighting her brother, Lance, in The Mortal Cure (episode #1x12). This is a great fight scene! Even though Mick is human, he still jumps into the battle. I love how he stakes the minion vamp. He has the moves as a Vampire or human! Unfortunately, Lance is so strong. When he taunts Mick about wanting to be a mortal, it makes me wanna smack him myself. He is too arrogant! Jason Butler Harner does a good job with the villain role. Lance knows he can do whatever he wants with Coraline and Mick. Coraline surrenders to Lance to save Mick's life. I wouldn't want to trade places with her. I wonder if we will see Mick try to find and rescue her in the future.

Video ~ Fearnet interviews Alex O'Loughlin and Brian J White at Comic Con

Fearnet.com had the opportunity to interview Alex O'Loughlin and Brian J. White when Moonlight was introduced at Comic Con 2007. I think Alex is super adorable with his glasses on. This is one of the few times I've seen him interviewed while wearing them. Brian is very rarely interviewed at all, so I'm happy to see him in this video.

Moonlight will not be in CBS repeat schedule as of February 22nd, 2008

CBS has issued a new press release regarding their Friday night schedule. We better enjoy the Moonlight reruns while we can. :( The Price is Right specials will be airing on Friday starting February 22nd, 2008 at 7:00 PM (CST). That is the Ghost Whisperer's time slot, so GW will move to 8:00 PM (CST) taking over Moonlight's spot. At least, it does say Moonlight will return "later this season." We just don't know when yet.

"THE PRICE IS RIGHT" RETURNS TO PRIME TIME WITH SIX NEW SPECIALS HOSTED BY DREW CAREY, AIRING FRIDAYS BEGINNING FEB. 22

THE PRICE IS RIGHT, hosted by Drew Carey, returns to prime time with six new specials to be broadcast on Fridays, beginning February 22nd, 2008 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. These will be the first primetime specials to be broadcast since Carey took hosting reins from former host Bob Barker.

During THE PRICE IS RIGHT six-week primetime run, GHOST WHISPERER will move to 9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT. MOONLIGHT will return to the schedule later this season.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT, with host Drew Carey, is the longest-running game show in television history. In 2007, it won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show. Produced by FremantleMedia North America, THE PRICE IS RIGHT is broadcast weekdays (11:00 AM-12:00 Noon, ET; 10:00-11:00 AM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Another Sophia Myles Interview!

We have another good interview with Sophia Myles to enjoy. I'm glad she is getting attention! :) This time, it is Daemon's TV providing good information for us. We have read a few of the questions and responses before, but Sophia also goes into more details in some areas. She clears up whether or not trivia that was written about her is correct. I've always wondered if the little tidbits you read about stars on certain websites are true or not. Sophia, again, brings up her wonderful friendship with Shannyn Sossamon & her desire to work with her more in the future. Even when a reporter asks about working with Jason Dohring, she brings it back to Shannyn.

Last week, SOPHIA MYLES, who plays reporter Beth Turner in CBS’ MOONLIGHT, took some time to speak with a few reporters.

Sophia Myles comes from England and is thus part of what we call this season’s British Invasion, not that we are complaining.

Q : What is in store for Beth when the show comes back?

Sophia Myles : Well I don’t know yet until the strike is over. I’m not sure and it’s very exciting. I mean I think you’ll see in the final episode, talk about leaving the audience hanging. When I read the script, you just want to know more and I think there’s definitely a story for us still to tell. I won’t be satisfied if we don’t come back and make anymore, but we’ll see.

Q : Have you seen any preliminary ideas or anything?

Sophia Myles : No, everyone’s speculating, everyone’s excited. We’re just waiting, waiting for the strike to lift, but just having won the people’s choice awards and Alex, I’ve just been told that Alex has been voted the sexiest man (one of the sexiest stars on TV) by TV Guide, and we love making it so much and people seem to really love it. It’s all very optimistic.

Q : There’s been a few different executive producers on “Moonlight” since it was first presented at Comic Con, are you surprised how well everything turned out?

Sophia Myles : Yeah. (laughs) I’m baffled because it’s like, it’s strange, Moonlight is such a force to be reconned with, because I had no idea what I was getting myself involved with coming over here making this show. I kind of saw a pilot that they had shot before and I didn’t know if it had any life. I didn’t know and it has been this organic thing that A) refuses to die and B) it just gets stronger and stronger, and I think more and more powerful and sexy and exciting each show. So bring it on. I think there needs to be more.

Q : What attracts you to a role? What kind of qualities to you look for in a role or a script?

Sophia Myles : If I want to go on the adventure, you know, if I read the story and I want to go to that world and experience that. It’s as simple as that. I think I’m a storyteller, it’s like, am I interested in this guy on this journey and can I kind of bring something to this that’s gonna make it even better than what’s already on the page? What’s my part in this? I don’t know, I like to play strong women. It’s hard to find really good roles for women, so I like to play females that are really well written and not just written for men, not just written to be just the sex object because that’s boring and lots of people can do that. I’m interested in the workings of the female mind.

Daemon’s TV : As an actor how do you prepare for parts?

Sophia Myles : You know I am like the most non-method person for acting. I kind of figure it out as I go along. You start thinking about it once you’ve read the script. It kind of helps once you see the costume or meet the costume designer. It’s a collaborative thing you see, it’s not just me creating Beth Turner, there’s somebody who designs her clothes, then there’s my make-up artist, there’s hairstylists, and then there’s the set designer who designs her apartment. If you think about it, someone’s apartment is as important, it tells you a lot about a character so it’s kind of a cumulative, collaborating thing rather.

Q : In your “Doctor Who” episode you play a very interesting woman also where you’re in love with an immortal, is that something that attracted you to the “Moonlight” role?

Sophia Myles : I never thought about that actually and I realized only recently there are a lot of parallels between the Moonlight story and that Doctor Who episode, “The Girl in the Fireplace,” actually. But no, I hadn’t thought about that at the time.

Daemon’s TV : Can you tell us how you got the part of Beth?

Sophia Myles : Yeah, I was written a letter from the producers of the show and Joel Silver’s people basically asking me to come and do it and so I kind of couldn’t really believe it at first, I didn’t think that it was legitimate just because I couldn’t believe that I would be offered something so magical like this out right without auditioning or anything. But they had already made a pilot and then they were kind of recasting and changing everything around and they were going to kind of reshoot the pilot. So I just was so intrigued by the opportunity to come and be in Los Angeles already with a job, you know, paid to come and do a fabulous job working at Warner Brothers. I mean I couldn’t say no really, I would have been an absolute idiot. So I was just kind of interested in the kind of adventure of it all, it sounded so different to me, and that’s how it happened.

Q : You’ve had quite a few roles in genre title, “Underworld,” “Doctor Who,” “Moonlight,” are you a fan of sci-fi or horror?

Sophia Myles : I love sci-fi, I don’t know about horror. Horror freaks me out, like I’m not gonna watch any of it because I just get terrified and then can’t sleep on my own you know, stupid. And vampires, I can take or leave them. I like science fiction, anything kind of other planets and all that kind of stuff, I like that.

Q : With Josh now dead, was it something you were surprised at how quickly within the first nine episodes the love triangle has been evaporated?

Sophia Myles : No, I thought for a long time especially after Beth and Mick had kissed, I was saying to the producers “come on guys, she needs to deal with this, morally be a good girl and she’s gonna need to be honest with Josh and end it or stop hanging out with Mick.” You know you can’t really send him off on vacation, that’s not really dealing with it, because he disappeared for a few episodes if you remember, and then he was back. So when they finally did end the relationship, I mean I thought it was a little extreme killing him, but there you go. But I’m glad, I mean not that I’m glad he’s dead obviously especially for Jordan Belfi, the actor who played him, but I’m relieved in a sense that that kind of dilemma is gone, it makes it so exciting and kind of deep now because it’s such a huge thing, I mean it’s really traumatic what’s happened to her.

Q : What has been your favorite project to be a part of?

Sophia Myles : Well, so many I mean if you say favorite in terms of the film that I think is the best as a finished piece or the film that I loved working on the most. “Tristan + Isolde” was such a magical experience, the scenery and working in Ireland, just completely took my breath away. And then I had a great time on “Thunderbirds.” I love being on films, I love making films, like I love my job, so kind of all of them for different reasons. but the best ones are when you really luck out and you work with great people. Working with Alex O’Loughlin for example, that’s such a joy of Moonlight, and then I loved working with Jamie Bell. I did a film with him that’s coming out this year in the United States. It’s a film I did with Jamie Bell, directed by David Mackenzie, and it’s called “Hallam Foe.” It’s the name of the central character, and that’s really interesting. Then another film called “Outlander” with James Caviezel, John Hurt, and Ron Perlman. It’s set in 709 AD and this alien ship crash lands on planet earth. It’s kind of a science fiction slash period drama, very interesting. I play a viking warrior princess in that one. And in the other one, the Jamie Bell film, I play a hotel manager in Scotland.

Daemon’s TV : How would describe the atmosphere on the set on Moonlight?

Sophia Myles : It’s funny, it’s a family. We have our good days and we have our bad days, but when it’s good, it’s amazing. There’s a lot of laughter, it’s infectious. I think because there’s such talented people working on this show across the board everyone, all the actors are really strong, the directors are fantastically creative, everyone’s clever so there’s a really great creative sets. We’re a good one.

Q : Were you surprised with the finale? Is it a good cliffhanger?

Sophia Myles : They leave you hanging. I’ve just seen the last scene, I haven’t seen the whole episode yet, but yeah it’s left totally open ended and utterly unsatisfactory as far as I’m concerned. There must be more episodes of Moonlight given the way that we leave it.

Q : Have you guys pretty much written off the rest of the season because of the strike?

Sophia Myles : I have no idea, I’m just waiting now. We’re all kind of very excited because we just won the People’s Choice Awards, it’s great fan base. As soon as the strike lifts I think we’re all hoping that we, you know, off we go again, so fingers crossed. Well if they’re not I’m going to be going knocking on to somebody’s door at CBS. I really hope that we make more.

Daemon’s TV : I read a few trivia facts on your imdb page and I was curious to know if they were true. It says that you listen to Tracy Chapman, that your favorite movie is “The Goonies,” and that you speak German and French. Is any of that true?

Sophia Myles : No, I don’t necessarily speak German and French. I can understand German pretty well. I haven’t spoken it for years though. French no, that’s not true. I can understand though if somebody was being rude about me in French or German. And the same goes with Italian, if someone was rude about me I’d know. “The Goonies,” no. I mean I’ve got lots of different favorite films so I would say no that’s not really true, but I do love it, it’s one of my favorite childhood films. And yeah, I like Tracy Chapman but I like a lot of other stuff. Other music, I’m quite into Snow Patrol at the moment.

Q : You don’t get to work a lot with Jason Dohring, are you hoping that would change when the show comes back?

Sophia Myles : Yeah it would be nice. Jason’s great, he’s really cool. He’s a nice guy so yeah it would be great. I want to work with Shannyn (Sossamon) though, she’s who I really want to work with.

Q : Why do you want to work with Shannyn Sossamon?

Sophia Myles : I think she’s great. I was a fan of her ages ago. I was really excited when I found out she was on the show. I loved her from “Knight’s Tale,” I just think she’s great, she’s gorgeous. She’s my friend now so it’d be fun. We laugh a lot.

Moonlight's Australian Television Ratings Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

The Ringer episode (#1x07) of Moonlight aired Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 on Australian television. The show had 670,000 viewers. It was in 18th place on the Aussie tv ratings chart.

Moonlight being removed from Channel Nine's tv schedule in Australia

Australian television guru, David Knox of TV Tonight, is reporting that Moonlight will soon no longer air in Australia. Channel Nine will be removing it, along with four other programs. The network has not announced new show times or days as of yet. :( I receive lots of email from Aussie viewers we have fallen in love with Moonlight.... and Alex. They are not gonna be happy about this! I bet Channel 9 will be receiving loads of calls and mail from dissatisfied fans.

Alex O'Loughlin may be left to wander the streets at night.

Nine is taking Moonlight, ER, Men in Trees, You Are What You Eat and Turn Back Your Body Clock out of schedule on Wednesday 6th February.

No replacement timeslots have yet been issued. It was never going to be an easy transition from summer to ratings for fans of these shows, and Nine is not alone in leaving fans lingering over their favourite summer fare.

The TV Addict Interviews Sophia Myles

The TV Addict has a great interview with Sophia Myles. A few of the questions are familiar, but it is still nice to see more reporters talking to her. Sophia does not like the thought of Moonlight ending with that final scene at Josh's funeral any more than we do ~ "I’ve just seen the last scene, and things are left totally open-ended and utterly unsatisfactory. As soon as the Strike lifts, I’ll be knocking on CBS’s door. I won’t be satisfied until we come back." Good for you, Sophia! I like her feisty nature :)

After numerous re-casts, re-shoots and behind-the-scenes drama, actress Sophia Myles is as surprised as anyone that MOONLIGHT has done so well. Yet six months and one People’s Choice Award later, here she is. Kind enough to take some time out of her, well, not so busy schedule [courtesy of the Writer’s Guild of America Strike] to talk to a group of reporters via conference call about MOONLIGHT’S jaw-dropping season finale airing [January 18th, 2008] at 9PM on CBS (CTV in Canada).

The TV Addict : So honestly, after such an inauspicious start, are you surprised things have turned out so well for MOONLIGHT?

Sohia Myles : It’s definitely strange that MOONLIGHT has become such a force. I had no idea, coming over from here [from England], making the show, that it would have any life. But it’s become this organic thing that refuses to die. It seems to be getting stronger and stronger and more powerful with each episode.

Q : How was it you were cast in MOONLIGHT?

Sophia Myles : I was written a letter from the producers [Joel Silver] basicially asking me to come and do the part. At first I didn’t think it was legitimate, I couldn’t believe I’d be offered something so magical without an audition. But they already made the pilot and I was so intrigued to be in Los Angeles; being paid to do a fabulous job at Warner Bros. I couldn’t say no.

Q : What attracted you to the role of Beth?

Sophia Myles : With any part I ask: Do I want to go on the adventure? To that world? Am I interested in the journey? Can I bring something to the role that’s going to make it better than what’s on the page? What’s my part in this? I like playing strong woman and it’s hard to find really good roles for woman. Really well written females that aren’t just sex objects.

Q : Having guest-starred on an episode of DR. WHO as well, are you a fan of genre television?

Sophia Myles : Horror freaks me out. Vampires I can take them or leave them. But I like science fiction and the idea that there are other planets.

Q : As an actor, how do you get into character?

Sophia Myles : I am the most non-method person you will ever meet. I kind of figure it out as I go along. The incredible costume designer, hairstylist, makeup artists and set designers really help me out as well. You can tell a lot about a character by their apartment.

Q : Talk about your tremendous chemistry with co-star Alex O’Loughlin. Can you predict something like that?

Sophia Myles : It’s absolutely luck and the most wonderful thing. It’s the gift you wish for as a producer. If there was a formula for chemistry, every show would be a it show. But all I know, is that in twelve years of working, I’ve had a lot of co-stars and some people you click with, some people you don’t. We just happen to be really lucky, a fantastic due, we make each other better. It’s like playing a really good game of tennis, we raise each other’s game.

Q : And off the camera?

Sophia Myles : Our relationship out of character is based on humor. We laugh our asses of. If you were to film us off set, it would make a funnier and better show than MOONLIGHT. [Editor’s note: Here’s hoping the off-the-set antics are included as DVD Bonus material]

It must make for a very fun set?

Sophia Myles : Our set is like a family. We have our good days and our bad. When it’s good, it’s amazing. We have such talented people working on the board. Everyone’s so clever, so creative.

The TV Addict : Were you surprised that the writer’s killed Josh so soon into the show’s run?

Sophia Myles : After Mick and Beth kissed, I kept saying, come on guys, she’s got to morally be a good girl, be honest and end it with Josh. So when it finally ended, well — I felt it was a little extreme killing the poor guy — but I’m relieved in the sense that the dilemma is gone from her life. It also makes the Mick and Beth relationship that much more exciting and deep.

The TV Addict : Does [the] finale wrap things up nicely? Or will fans be left with hanging until MOONLIGHT returns?

Sophia Myles : I’ve just seen the last scene, and things are left totally open-ended and utterly unsatisfactory. As soon as the Strike lifts, I’ll be knocking on CBS’s door. I won’t be satisfied until we come back.

Q : What’s in store for season 2?

Sophia Myles : I won’t know until the strike is over. There are no new scripts.

The TV Addict : Between yourself, TERMINATOR’S Lena Headey, UGLY BETTY’s Ashley Jensen and Michelle Ryan’s BIONIC WOMAN, the British are quietly taking over Hollywood. What do you attribute the recent British invasion to?

Sophia Myles : Really there is no work in England, it’s rubbish! I’ve known Anna Friel [PUSHING DAISIES] for a while and since we’re the same age, we’ve kept up via telephone. We leave each-other Meltdown Messages, “You’ll never believe what they made me do today!”

Q : Can you elaborate on the differences between working in the US versus the UK?

Sophia Myles : One thing is the hours. They really work you hard. Six days a week, sixteen hours a day on a tough day. You’re working pretty much all the time. In England there’s a lot of sitting around, drinking cups of tea and waiting. In America it’s go-go-go!

Q : Like your character Beth, you’ve been thrust into a pretty scary situation. New job, new country Personally what’s your biggest fear?

Sophia Myles : The ocean scares me, white sandy bottoms are okay, but when it gets too deep and murky it feels like a swimming pool with sharks. Human beings also scare me a lot more than vampires!

Q : Human beings with cameras perhaps! Have you encountered the Hollywood Paparazzi?

Sophia Myles : I think it’s absolutely fascinating. But I’m not part of that scene and never want to be. No one that is being followed by the paparazzi have not started it. It just doesn’t happen. It’s a two-sided relationship. It’s very easy to stay well clear if you don’t open your mouth. If I talk to the press, I’m talking about my work. I’m not talking about what I did on a Friday night.

It’s sad when young girls aren’t protected by their families or don’t have close adult confidents. It’s a very scary beast. Poor old Britney, it’s a whole new thing. A horde of men with cameras following around a young mother. That didn’t happen even five years ago.

Off Topic ~ Australian Actor Heath Ledger has died

Very, very sad news today..... Aussie actor, Heath Ledger, has died. I thought he was very talented. My favorites among his films are Ned Kelly, Monster's Ball, The Patriot & Brokeback Mountain. I'm a huge Batman fan, so I am looking forward to Heath playing the Joker. He has been excellent in all the clips & trailers I've seen for it. I just can not believe this!

At the moment, they believe the medicine found at the scene is over the counter sleeping pills.

Per MSNBC ~

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28.

According to WNBC, Ledger was found with pills strewn all around him.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper, who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, found him unconscious at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET, according to the New York Times. After receiving no response from the actor after shaking him, they called authorities.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain,” where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in “The Dark Night,” a sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins.” He’s had starring roles in “A Knight’s Tale” and “The Patriot,” and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in “Monster’s Ball.”

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

His latest role was in “I’m Not There,” in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Rest in peace!

Review of The Ringer (episode #1x07) on Australian website

The next Moonlight airing on Australian television will be The Ringer (episode #1x07). TVFix online has reviewed it. I would never use the word "staid" to describe our show, because to me Moonlight is the complete opposite of that. She does have lots of positive things to say, of course. Sexy, promising & refreshing!

Since we are talking about The Ringer, I couldn't stop myself from using this photo of Mick's first workout scene. I remember how much I enjoyed the fact that the show began with him doing difficult & hot upside down sit ups. I would so buy an Alex O'Loughlin exercise DVD! :>

Late night TV is now undead. If you miss Angel, this sexy, moody vampire drama will see you through to bite-time - er, bedtime.

Flicking between the mid-week offerings of the summer non-ratings period, viewers might be surprised to stumble upon this promising new series with a refreshing take on two familiar genres. That old-faithful of late-night viewing - the private eye - is brought back to life in the form of Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin). Mick isn't your average lone investigator, though - he also happens to be a reluctant vampire. That's right, it's a fang-fest mixed in with the private dick angle.

True to the gumshoe style Mick narrates his thoughts, which makes for easy watching no matter what time you happen to land into an episode.

In this installment, a building catches fire and a murder is unwittingly captured by a newspaper photographer shooting the inferno. But Mick is convinced there's a little more to it. Adding to the intrigue, that photographer (Shannyn Sossamon) looks a whole lot like Mick's former wife, whom he killed years earlier. Is the resemblance just a coincidence, or is there something more sinister going on?

Though the first half is a little formulaic, the pace manages to pick up in latter parts. Given enough patience, Moonlight does eventually offer a payoff. Panned for being a bit too staid, this new entry would benefit from sharper writing instead of complex plotlines. The promise is there, though, and this supernatural drama may well prove its critics wrong in the long run.

Moonlight airs on the Nine Network on Wednesday, January 23, at 9:30pm.

"Thank you" to the wonderful Aussie blog reader who made sure that I knew about this article!

Aussie actress, Yvonne Strahovski, mentions Alex O'loughlin in interview

Alexis, a loyal Moonlight fan and blog reader, provided this video for our enjoyment! Australian actress, Yvonne Strahovski, stars on the funny tv show, Chuck. She was interviewed by the lovely Craig Ferguson on his television program, the Late Late Show. Craig is my fave late night talk show host. He is hilarious and you never know what he is gonna say. "My cheeky little monkeys!" Enough about Craig :)

They discuss how good the actors and actresses from Australia are at doing accents. Yvonne teases that she is surprised Americans can understand Craig's Scottish accent, and then does a pretty good on the spot version.

In the interview, Craig brings up the subject of all the Aussie actors in Hollywood, and specifically mentions Alex O'Loughlin. He previously interviewed Alex.... another reason I like Craig!

Craig ~ "There's another guy on the CBS.... the CBS schedule, the Vampire detective. He's from Australia."

Yvonne ~ "Yea, Alex O'Loughlin. He is. His father and my mother actually know each other. They work together at a boy's school in Sydney."

Craig ~ "Really? Did you ever date him?"

Yvonne ~ "No. Alex?"

Craig ~ "Yea."

Yvonne ~ "No. I only just met him. And, he's unavailable anyway. And, he's not my style."

Craig ~ "What? Vampire detective?"

Did we finally find someone who is immune to Alex's considerable charms? So... her style is not funny, gorgeous, down to earth, open, gracious, athletic and delicious ~ because those are all words that come to my mind when thinking of Alex. *smile*

Video ~ Final scenes from The Mortal Cure ~ Episode #1x12

Thanks to Jinganglang we have a video of the final scenes from last Friday's Moonlight ~ The Mortal Cure (episode #1x12).

Human Mick limps home all bruised and beaten. Then, orders a table full of food. It makes me laugh every time. Wouldn't you do the same thing if you hadn't been able to eat in 55 years?!? :)

Mick realizes that he can not curl up to rest in the freezer. No bed :( Poor Mick has to sleep on the couch.

It is so cute when he looks in the mirror and pokes his bruise just to make sure he is still human.

The funeral scene : Mick ~ "No matter how close we start to get, there's always been this eternal wall between us. She, a mortal. And me, a Vampire. But with everything that's happened, maybe there's hope that things could be different."

The music used is All Fall Down by One Republic. I have always liked that song, and now I like it even more :) Moonlight has the best soundtrack of any television series. Just wish they would put it all together & release a CD for Moonlight fans!

Directors Guild and Producers reach agreement to avoid a strike

Update : Writer's Strike & DGA/AMPTP News ~

Since the Writers Guild went on strike, many have been wondering if the Directors Guild would be next. The DGA's negotiations with the AMPTP have obviously fared better than the writer's because they have already come to an agreement after less than a week of formal talks. The directors contract covers some of the same territory that is so contentious between the WGA & AMPTP, such as new media. Due to that, sources say they hope this agreement will provide a blueprint for a new contract with the writers and an end to the strike. *fingers crossed*

According to the United Hollywood site ~

WGA Begins Back Channel Discussion With AMPTP

UH has learned that as of Friday, January 18th, 2008, the WGA began an informal dialogue with one of the conglom bosses. The conversations were cordial and respectful on both sides.

This is the way that the DGA talks began -- with informal consultations at a high level between leaders on both sides. It is not negotiation, it's the precursor to negotiation, but the good news is that what Patric Verrone, David Young and John Bowman said at the captain's meeting Friday appears to be very true: we are finally at a moment where the companies are ready to start seriously bargaining.

More info about the DGA agreement with the AMPTP, from United Hollywood ~

LOS ANGELES – The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced Thursday, January 17th, 2008 that it has concluded a tentative agreement on the terms of a new 3-year collective bargaining agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Highlights of the new agreement include:

Increases both wages and residual bases for each year of the contract.

Establishes DGA jurisdiction over programs produced for distribution on the Internet.

Establishes new residuals formula for paid Internet downloads (electronic sell-through) that essentially doubles the rate currently paid by employers.

Establishes residual rates for ad-supported streaming and use of clips on the Internet.

"Two words describe this agreement - groundbreaking and substantial," said Gil Cates, chair of the DGA's Negotiations Committee, in announcing the terms of the new agreement. "The gains in this contract for directors and their teams are extraordinary – and there are no rollbacks of any kind.

"Formal negotiations between the DGA's 50-member Negotiations Committee and the AMPTP began Saturday, January 12, and were concluded Thursday, January 17th, 2008. Talks were led by Cates and DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth. They were preceded by months of informal discussions and nearly two years of preparation and research by Guild staff and consultants.

"This was a very difficult negotiation that required real give and take on both sides," said DGA president Michael Apted. "Nonetheless, we managed to produce an agreement that enshrines the two fundamental principles we regard as absolutely crucial to any employment and compensation agreement in this digital age: First, jurisdiction is essential. Without secure jurisdiction over new-media production—both derivative and original—compensation formulas are meaningless. Second, the Internet is not free.
