Interviews with Moonlight's Set Decorator & Production Designer

Mick's loft is my dream apartment. You already know how I drool over his bookshelves. :) I think the production crew of Moonlight does an incredible job, especially with the budget constraints. April, from Monsters and Critics, has two informative interviews for us! One with our set decorator Chris Marsteller, and the other with our production designer Alfred Sole. She asked them questions submitted by the fans. They discuss many topics such as that amazing artwork on Josef's ceiling, shopping for Mick's pad, job duties, etc.

The top photo is an interior shot of Mick's apartment. The second image is of Beth's desk at Buzzwire.

M & C :

I love the bookcase and want to buy or make one for my new library. Any suggestions?

Chris :

Of course, Mick's bookcase is custom built. It was designed by our production designer Alfred Sole and is (as most of Mick's place) a defining part of the set.

M & C :

Who did the artwork in Josef's [Jason Dohring's] office / condo on his ceilings and walls?

Chris :

The artist is Alex Gross. We came across an art book of his and really felt it had the right flavor for Joseph. We wanted to make a large statement in Joseph's office and also hint at his age as a vampire. With the show being set in LA and wanting to keep a very contemporary edge to it, the challenge came in defining the characters. With Joseph, it came down to grand scale. And what could be grander than a painted ceiling a la the Vatican.

M & C :

Where do you find the decor for Alex's home, and how do you decide what items "go" or "fit" with each character?

Chris :

When I started prepping the show there were many discussions as to how our vampire's live. We wanted to keep the show very contemporary and and imply that vampires do live among us and on the surface you might not recognize anything out of the ordinary at first glance. With Mick's loft I chose some pieces from Cisco Home, Design Within Reach, Diva, Sonrisa, and other small shops around LA. The idea was to keep Mick's very clean and simple. He has been living long enough that he has his life style down to a sort of routine and it is unnecessary to have a lot of excess. And though he does most of his business at night, and simple lines often times feel colder, we tried to keep it warm with our color pallette.

M & C :

What is your favorite set on "Moonlight" and describe why?

Alfred :

Mick’s Loft is really the centerpiece of our permanent sets and is definitely my favorite. The idea of the show was to put a modern spin on the vampire genre, so I wanted the sets to reflect that. In addition, Mick was born in 1922 so he has had time to acquire plenty of worldly knowledge, including an appreciation of art and design. Therefore, his living space had to reflect a lifetime of experience as well as a contemporary aesthetic that fit the look of the show. Other fun aspects of the set are the kitchen, complete with a hidden blood storage compartment, and the freezer room where Mick sleeps in a stainless steel, glass top freezer.

Mick St John's Incredible Art Deco Apartment Building

I love to take photos of gorgeous buildings and have a special weakness for Art Deco. Since they first showed Mick St John's apartment building on Moonlight, I have thought how perfect it was for him. Fortunately, it is real... not some fake facade created on a computer. The Title Guarantee Building, located at Fifth and Hill in LA, is used for exterior shots. Here are two wonderful pictures of the actual building. Of course, I had to throw in a photograph of Mick St John ( Alex O'Loughlin ) & Beth Turner ( Sophia Myles ) on his balcony, from Moonlight's 12:04 episode ( #1x08 ).

Coveting Mick's Bookshelves :)

The art direction and prop staff of Moonlight do a phenomenal job! Especially on Mick's apartment and office. It just fits him. Recently, I got another friend addicted to the show. We both covet Mick's bookshelves! This behind the scenes photo is for Ducki, and all of our fellow book nerds :)

I can see him sitting there!

This photo is from the awesome folks at the Monsters and Critics site.
