CW's Dawn Ostroff credits fan letters & emails with influencing decision to air Moonlight

TV Guide interviewed Dawn Ostroff (entertainment chief of the CW Network) regarding the channel's plan to air Moonlight after The Vampire Diaries. She specifically says all the email messages and letters loyal fans of the show continue to send influenced their decision! *cheer* Keep up the good work! Who knows what else Moonlight fans will accomplish. =)

The CW Sinks Its Teeth Into Moonlight

Alex O'Loughlin fans got a bloody good summer treat when the CW acquired all 16 episodes of Moonlight, the Aussie actor's short-lived but beloved vampire detective show. "We get letters and e-mails about Moonlight all the time," says CW entertainment chief Dawn Ostroff. "And so we thought it would be interesting if we aired it following The Vampire Diaries."

Moonlight (Thursdays at 9/8c, The CW) follows the perpetually 30-year-old private investigator Mick St. John (O'Loughlin), his hedonistic buddy Josef (Jason Dohring) and Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), a young reporter whose chemistry with Mick threatens her relationship with her human fiancé. Around to cause trouble: the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), who turned Mick on their wedding night six decades earlier.

On tonight's episode, as Mick and Beth track down a dangerous newly formed blood sucker, the potential couple have the conversation. Mick offers the snoopy journalist a primer on all things vampire. But will he reveal his own creepily romantic turning story? And will Beth bolt?

"I love the aggressive, animalistic side of the show," says O'Loughlin, who will star in CBS' buzzworthy remake of Hawaii Five-O in the fall. "I love the genre, the action and the masculinity of the character." The many passionate female fans were "awesome," he says, "but I want my pals to think it's cool." Cool, yeah, and very, very hot.

At that time, V&S editor Edward Gross caught up with both actors (the interview with Jason has previously been posted here), and what follows is his conversation with Alex O'Loughlin. Note that Jason was sitting next to him at the time doing a separate interview -- and pay attention early on to Alex's discussion about his pizza, which is amusing. Hollywood Reporter website mentions Shelby's interview with Alex O'Loughlin

Not a nuclear explosion drawn in crayons ... but ... still actually combines a kiddie style and "Jericho." The tagline: "Where kids and 'Jericho' meet." Second, the site is sending "Jericho" DVDs to troops in Iraq? I don't ... really? Third, the kid just interviewed Alex O'Loughlin for the site? Okay, O'Loughlin has ... absolutely nothing to do with "Jericho," but ... that's pretty darn impressive none the less (I've written a half dozen posts on "Moonlight" and never interviewed O'Loughlin). And Shelby, it should be noted, asks better questions than some TV critics. Seems O'Loughlin wanted to be a fighter pilot when he grew up.

New audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin

The fantastic Shelby, from Jericho 4 Kids, has done a splendid new interview with Alex O'Loughlin! It is sooooooooooooooo good to hear his voice again. *cheer* His interviews are always interesting.... never monotone, boring or predictable. Not surprisingly, Alex is respectful, comfortable and adorable with Shelby.

Great question about his music & if he has any plans to record. As usual, Alex downplays his musical abilities. I hope we get to sample his songs one day.

He also downplays his writing skills. No ego trip! Unlike many stars, Alex is humble & down to earth.

I'm thrilled that Alex will be a producer on his next show. That will give him more control of the project.

He wouldn't give out details about what would have happened to Mick & Beth if Moonlight had been renewed "just in case anything ever happened with that show." I can't tell you how happy I was to hear him say that :)

Another sincere and heartwarming thank you to Moonlight fans!

Love Alex saying he thinks Moonlight would make a good movie. :) That will make some who worried that he wouldn't want to go back to the role of Mick very relieved. I giggled when Alex said to Shelby, "Maybe you should write to Joel Silver and suggest that." We have been, Alex! Moonlight fans regularly tell Joel & Warner Bros that we want a Moonlight film, and ask them not to give up on our show.

Joel Silver says writers already working on Moonlight stories for season two!

SciFi Wire has interviewed Moonlight's executive producer Joel Silver. I'm happy to hear that our writers are already thinking ahead & working on storylines for next season! All my positive vibes are headed their way for that pitch meeting with CBS :)

Moonlight Looks To Year Two

Joel Silver, executive producer of the CBS vampire drama Moonlight, told SCI FI Wire that he and the writers are already working on stories for a hoped-for second season and that he will be pitching CBS next week to win renewal.

We're hopeful," Silver said in a group interview on April 18 while promoting his latest film, Speed Racer. "I mean, the next episode goes on next Friday night, which is a really great episode. It starts out, Mick [Alex O'Loughlin] is still human, but then he has to go back to being a vampire. And I have three more really strong episodes. And I hope that it does come back, because we have a whole plan for next year that's fantastic."

CBS will announce its fall lineup in May at its annual upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Before then, Silver and the writing staff are planning to meet with the network and make their case for season two for the show, which has earned solid if unspectacular ratings.

"Well, we're going to go in, as a matter of fact, next week for a pitch meeting to tell them what we're going to do next year," Silver said. "And then that, coupled with the ratings, we'll know what happens." Moonlight returns with the first of four new episodes on April 25 in its regular timeslot, Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Over the past few months we’ve received many requests to feature the one and only Jason Dohring. Just like the man himself, Portrait is more than happy to deliver fans requests, and with great timing too! On the occasion of this talented actor’s birthday later this month, Portrait presents to you this must have guide to Jason Dohring.

You know him best as the tortured but snarky Logan Echolls on “Veronica Mars” and the mischievous vampire Josef Konstan on “Moonlight”, and although these two characters share similar characteristics, Jason is different to his alter egos. “It’s funny – I always get these characters that I’m so afraid of – I so feel like I can’t…I’m like, this is so not me. With Logan, I thought, “Why me? I’m a nice guy,” says Jason, who interestingly enough originally auditioned for the role of nice guy Duncan Kane on “Veronica Mars”.

It’s one thing to imagine Jason not playing Logan on “Veronica Mars”, but can you imagine if Jason wasn’t a regular on the show? No way right? Initially, Jason was meant to be a guest star and Michael Muhney’s Sheriff Lamb was meant to be a regular instead. “I think Logan became a much bigger character than anticipated. It’s the result of Jason Dohring being an engaging performer that all the writers wanted to write for him,” divulges show creator Rob Thomas.

When “Veronica Mars” came to an end, Jason’s popularity carried onto “Moonlight” and grew even more. Not actually part of the original “Moonlight” cast, since Josef was a 60 year old man, Jason found himself a contender when the show received an overhaul. Aware of Jason’s talent, executive producer of “Moonlight” Joel Silver, who was also the executive producer on “Veronica Mars”, pushed for Jason to be cast on “Moonlight”. “I would say very influential is an understatement, because he [Joel] pushed for me all the way,” reveals Jason. “He really did. Once they made this character into a 25 year old, he though of me and took me all the way through the network.” And just like on “Veronica Mars”, Jason’s “Moonlight” co-stars love him too! “Jason is just, like the most other-centred person that I know. He’s always thinking about other people, he’s always, he’s so generous with his time. I’d work again with him in a heartbeat,” Alex O’Loughlin, who plays Mick St John, told Moonlight-Detective.Com in an interview recently.

While his co-stars may gush about him and Jason is respectfully in awe of them as well, is there anyone that Jason would love to work with in the future? “I’d love to work with Ryan Gosling, I think he’s awesome. I think Jeff Bridges is unbelievable. I think he’s very underrated. Alfred Molina, I love. I think Meryl Streep is fantastic, I think she does amazing work. Jessica Lange is beautiful,” praises Jason.

Onscreen he’s had his fair share of love interest as the misunderstood-but-really-just-wants-to-be-loved-rich-kid on “Veronica Mars” to the billionaire playboy on “Moonlight”, but in real life Jason only has eyes for his wife Lauren, who is a painter.

The pair met in high school and were friends before they started dating, and married in 2004. “At the end of the day, it’s great to have someone who is your good friend to talk to and being able to be around someone you can be yourself with makes for a long lasting relationship,” says Jason. “It’s just so comfortable.”

Also highlighting the difference between Jason and his alter egos is the close relationship that Jason has with his family. Born on 30 March, 1982 in Ohio, to Doug and Laurie Dohring, Jason William Dohring is big brother to twins Robert and Jonathan, and twins Kelsey and Kirsten. That’s right, two sets of twins! “We don’t have twins anywhere else in the family so it’s like a one in a million chance,” says Jason. In fact it was through his siblings who were child actors (Kelsey and Kirsten played Chrissy on “Growing Pains”), that Jason got into acting. From the age of eight to twelve, Jason starred in commercials such as one for American Express and Sharp Electronics, before moving onto guest appearances in television shows such as “Roswell”, “Judging Amy”, “Once and Again”, “Boston Public”, “Jag”, and “Cold Case”. He has also starred in films such as Deep Impact, Black Cadillac, The Deep Below, and the Disney movie Ready to Run.

Although Jason shot to international fame with his role on “Veronica Mars” and has now become increasingly recognized for his work on Moonlight, Jason is continually looking for ways to better his acting skills. “I just try keeping an eye open for new stuff, listening, watching movies,” he says. In between filming seasons of “Veronica Mars”, Jason continued to take acting classes to further develop his craft. (See? How awesome and humble is this guy?) But if he wasn’t an actor, what would he do? “I would probably be like, I don’t know. A race car driver? A motorcycle driver? Something like that – that sounds like fun. Maybe a teacher. An acting teacher? I like people,” ponders Jason.

One thing that you may not know about Jason is that he is a 2nd generation Scientologist. There may have been some colourful ideas associated with the religion, but for Jason it has aided him creatively, so who are we to complain? “The misconceptions that occur with people who haven’t ever read a book about it, or don’t know what it’s about. They’re just taking someone else’s false opinion of what it is,” explains Jason. “Just for me, it saved my acting career. I became a professional through Scientology…I understand acting better because Scientology is the study of life.”

Also an inspiration to Jason are his fans, who Jason has nothing but praise for. “I’m a huge fan of fans and it is so fantastic when they write in; I love that. You get real feedback and it’s inspiring to keep on your game and keep trying,” declares Jason. Thanks to his work on “Veronica Mars” and “Moonlight”, Jason has an ever-growing fanbase but he hasn’t let it go his head, instead remaining ever so humble. It’s one thing to acknowledge fans and another to truly appreciate them, which is what Jason does. “Meeting Jason in person is something that never gets old. He takes the time to get to know you when you’re talking to him each time, and really remembers as much as he can the next time he sees you,” says dedicated Jason fan, Roz Foster, who has been lucky enough to have met Jason on several occasions. Echoing Roz’s sentiments is another loyal Jason fan fortunate enough to have met him – Jennifer Riddle. “He’s such an easy-going guy and really treats his fans with love and respect. He loves his job, but he loves his fans even more, and you can see it when you meet him in person,” says Jennifer. “He’s very down to Earth and will pretty much do anything you ask of him. Whether it’s taking a picture, signing an autograph, or even calling one of your friends because they couldn’t make the trip to meet him.”

Aww. Passionate, dedicated, talented, appreciative, good looking, humble – no wonder everyone loves him!

Jason is very passionate when it comes to children and prescription drugs – “I have very strong opinions about the psychiatric drugging of children. Pisses me off that we prescribe a drug to kids (Ritalin) that is in the same class as heroin,” declares Jason.

Moonlight Detective talks with Alex O'Loughlin

Melissa, from Moonlight Detective, has done a wonderful new interview with Alex O'Loughlin. I enjoy how candid and funny he always is in his chats. Humble as always, he congratulates the fans for Moonlight's People's Choice Award. He teases about Sophia bugging him on set. Talks about not being recognized and that it is not such a bad thing. I receive questions all the time about Mick St John's ring. Alex discusses it in this interview. He actually picked it out himself and fought for it. That is cool to know. Of course, he has some great things to say about Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring ~ how well they get along and so on. At the time of their talk, the news of Moonlight's April return was not yet known.

ML-D: Hi Alex, my name is Melissa and I’m with Moonlight-Detective.com.

Alex O’Loughlin: Hi Melissa!

ML-D: It’s nice to talk to you.

Alex O’Loughlin: It’s nice to talk to you too.

ML-D: I understand you just got back in town, were you working on the UK launch of the series?

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, I was actually, I was in Australia for five weeks first of all, and I was seeing my family and stuff, but I was also doing all of the final installments of the voice over, and I did a lot of press for the Australia launch of the show over there. And then I came back to LA for 24 hours and went to, I’ve been in Europe for three weeks doing that stuff so…

ML-D: Wow, so a couple months of jet lag!

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, actually my body, my times are so, they’re completely upside down; thoroughly invert everything so I’m just getting back to normal.

ML-D: Well, how was the experience? Are you getting a lot of fan response overseas already?

Alex O’Loughlin: Not that much through Europe. I mean, in Australia I get a lot of fan response to a certain extent because I’m from there. A lot of those guys know my Aussie work as well, but in Europe not too much. I mean, some people know a movie or two that I’ve done but the show has not played there yet. Yeah, I’m still pretty normal there which is nice. I’m pretty anonymous everywhere, really. Whenever I go out I should wear a hat and glasses and stuff, but no ever really says anything to me.

ML-D: Is it one of those big floppy hats?

Alex O’Loughlin: I wear a lot of hats, like I wear a lot. I always have a lot of hats, and I really love hats. Like, I have floppy ones, I have, kind of, broad, full brimmed, I have baseball caps. I just like hats. I’m a hat guy. So, no one really recognizes me.

ML-D: I guess I can see where that would be nice to be incognito.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, but like I said, it’s not like I’m meaning to be incognito. I’m like, I’ve always worn hats so it’s kinda cool just to roam around. I can’t really imagine what it would be like to have to be a celebrity, and I’m a celebrity. Not being able to leave the house without getting hassled by paparazzi and stuff like all the time. That’d be a bit of a nightmare I’d imagine.

ML-D: I would think it would be frustrating you know? You just wanted to go get some milk and…

Alex O’Loughlin: Right, right, however, it’s a glamorous problem that I don’t have so… (laughs)

ML-D: I don’t know whether to say I’m sorry or uh…

Alex O’Loughlin: Oh, I’d just say “moving on!” (laughs)

ML-D: Yup moving on! Well speaking of accessories, something that the fans have been talking about pretty much since the show premiered is Mick’s ring.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah.

ML-D: So I wanted to ask you about that. Do you know what the significance of the ring is?

Alex O’Loughlin: It’s the first thing I chose for Mick, for that character, and I chose that for him when we showed the pilot that didn’t air; the pilot with the original cast. It was, I wanted him to have a piece of jewelry that we could attach a time line to; that we could attach a storyline to, and that could be a piece of jewelry that was… cuz he’s quite a modern character, you know, I mean, he doesn’t dress in long velvet capes and… You know, I mean, he wears … he fits into contemporary society. He looks like any guy, you know? And I wanted him to have one piece one something that was from another time.

ML-D: Kind of a throwback?

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, and I know that he’s only, kind of, 90 years old himself, but you know, that ring comes from maybe when he went to Europe one time and he had an association with a six or seven hundred year old vampire and had a love affair with, or, you know, maybe he went to Prague, but it’s definitely from another time and it’s from another place and there’s a definite storyline attached to it that we haven’t sort of released yet and so hopefully you know… But it’s such a beautiful peace that I was looking for - I said, “I want him to have a ring,” and the guys were saying, like, the producers were asking me what I thought and I said, “Well, I don’t know.” And we were looking at the French symbols and we were looking at talking about the French origin of vampires and stuff which we start bringing into [episode 12] as well, and they brought in, you know, hundreds of different rings and I found that one, and I was like, “That’s the one! That’s the one I want.” And the producers were like, “No, no, no, it’s not right. It’s too…” And I was like - I really fought for it and I was like, “No, it’ll be good because…” And I sort of sold it, and it doesn’t actually have any religious iconography, or any fleur de lis, or anything specific on it. It’s just kind of got cool flower patterns, and there is a cross with diamonds, but it’s not like a crucifix, and so it’s… and it’s got that beautiful moonstone underneath, and so, yeah, it’s just a piece of jewelry that Mick wears on his right index finger, which is kind of unconventional as well. It’s not really a finger I associate ring wearing with, but I liked it, that’s different.

ML-D: It’s a pretty spectacular piece, and it sounds like you put a lot of thought into it. I do hope we get to see a storyline attached to it.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, me too.

ML-D: Speaking of that, I don’t know if you have any information on this and you may not be able to say anything about this, but with the strike over, do you have any idea when you guys are coming back?

Alex O’Loughlin: No. [Editor’s note: CBS announced mere hours later that they are planning to order a handful of new episodes to air later this spring.]

ML-D: Nothing yet?

Alex O’Loughlin: No, nothing at all. I wish I had an idea but it’s very frustrating for all of us, but no one knows. But then again, you know, like CBS are reknowned for not saying anything, and are reknowned for dropping info at the last minute, and so I’m not worried. And whatever the case may be, I feel really proud of what we’ve done to date, and we created a show in the face of adversity that’s had three different show runners, two different casts…

ML-D: It’s really an amazing success story for it.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, well, in the shadow of the biggest writers strike in 20 years, I mean, it’s like not only have we maintained serious numbers, we won a really important award and so it’s pretty great.

ML-D: Congratulations on the People’s Choice Award, by the way!

Alex O’Loughlin: Thank you! Listen, congratulations’s to you guys too, to all the fans. I mean, it’s not - I just happen to play Mick St. John. I mean, this is like - that award’s for all of us, you know.

ML-D: Yeah, well we did have a lot of fun organizing ourselves to vote, so we were pretty thrilled when you popped up on screen to say thank you.

Alex O’Loughlin: (laughs) Good!

ML-D: That was a banner day for the Moonlight fans.

Alex O’Loughlin: Awesome!

ML-D: I got to talk to Sophia a few weeks ago when [episodes] 12 and 13 were getting ready to come out, and she was telling us that someone should film you and she on the set, when you’re out of character, because you guys just have so much fun.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, we have a lot of fun.

ML-D: Are we going to be seeing the “Alex and Sophia Show” on the extras on the DVD?

Alex O’Loughlin: Well, I’m not sure about that, you might - she has a lot more down time than I do, you gotta understand. (laughs) I work harder than she does.

ML-D: Oh, really!

Alex O’Loughlin: She’s got more time to come and annoy me, that I’m usually, like, telling her to go away cuz I gotta read the next draft, or the next script, or the next whatever.

ML-D: Right, because you’re more serious and more focused…

Alex O’Loughlin: But, what I do think would be interesting is if we just strapped a camera on Sophia and made “The Sophia Show”, and I could make a cameo appearance from time to time.

ML-D: That would be fantastic! I mean, talking to her on the phone, she sounds like a lot of fun.

Alex O’Loughlin: She’s a lot of fun. She’s a great girl, and she brings a lot straight away. I don’t know if it’s the Brit - Aussie thing or what it is, but you know, we laugh a lot, and we have similar sensibilities, and we have mutual friends as well, and yeah, so I mean, not to mention a great actor and, you know.

ML-D: Right, well you guys have amazing chemistry on screen. It’s nice to know that it’s off screen too.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, no it’s very different off screen, you know. I mean the chemistry on screen is manufactured. Manufactured, I wonder if that’s the right word.

ML-D: A different set of circumstances?

Alex O’Loughlin: Well, it’s a different set of circumstances. We’re acting; we’re playing two characters, and the chemistry, a romantic chemistry, whereas off screen, we’re buddies you, know what I mean?

ML-D: Yeah, it’s her teasing you while you’re trying to focus. (laughs)

Alex O’Loughlin: Well, yeah, we have a relationship off screen, but it’s a platonic relationship that we have.

ML-D: Yeah, well it’s a lot of fun to watch you guys on screen.

Alex O’Loughlin: Cool!

ML-D: We also talked with Jason Dohring.

Alex O’Loughlin: Ah, lovely Jason!

ML-D: Yes, and he has so many nice things to say about you. I think you’re his hero.

Alex O’Loughlin: He’s such a great guy, he’s just, I feel really blessed working with these people, you know. Like, his family threw this Christmas party the likes I’ve never seen, and its just genuine, you know. They’re just genuinely wonderful people, and it’s such a pleasure to ah…when I see him on set, it’s like, YES! YES! And that’s rare, you know what I mean, it’s rare, rare, rare, rare. Especially in this industry, I mean, there’s so many f--kheads!

ML-D: To really like your coworkers, yeah, that is a blessing.

Alex O’Loughlin: You know? I mean there is! It’s a weird thing in acting, you know. I mean, we’re artists, but we deal with the human condition, which can involve emotion a lot, you know. And a lot of people get confused, a lot of people end up living this really introspective life. You can move into self obsession very quickly and very easily. You know, you need to constantly remind yourself it’s not about how you feel, it’s about how the audience feels. And it’s not about your emotions, it’s about the emotions of these characters, and so you are simply the device with which you deliver this character’s reality, or you bring life to this character and you become the mouthpiece for this character and whatever. And so, a lot of actors can be construed as self obsessed. Sort of vain and narcissistic, and Jason is just, like, the most other-centered person that you know. He’s always thinking about other people, he’s always, he’s so generous with his time. I’d work with him again in a heartbeat.

ML-D: I did want to ask you very quickly what else you’re working on. I know that you’ve got “Whiteout” coming up with Kate Beckensale.

Alex O’Loughlin: Yeah, I do. I know “Whiteout” is coming out this year sometime. I don’t know exactly when, you guys probably know more than me, but that should be a cool film. I haven’t seen a cut of it yet, but they’ve been working really hard on it. But yeah, it’s going to be fun. I’ve been going out on a couple of things and I’ve been approached on a couple of different films, because no one knows what’s going on with the tv show.

ML-D: Right.

Alex O’Loughlin: And of course, CBS is sort of still saying, “Well, we’re not comfortable with letting you just go and do something else,” which would suggest that Moonlight will be coming back, but then again I haven’t heard.

ML-D: Well I’m sure they’re not gonna want to let you go since you are…

Alex O’Loughlin: Well, yeah, one would presume that, but anyway, but I’m not actually officially attached to anything else. But there are a couple of things in the pipeline if Moonlight doesn’t go on this year, so. But because I’m not confirmed for anything, it would be silly for me to jinx myself.

ML-D: Sure, I can understand that. We’ll just have to keep our eyes open!

Alex O’Loughlin: There you go!

ML-D: For announcements of Alex, the movie star…

Fearnet.com had the opportunity to interview Alex O'Loughlin and Brian J. White when Moonlight was introduced at Comic Con 2007. I think Alex is super adorable with his glasses on. This is one of the few times I've seen him interviewed while wearing them. Brian is very rarely interviewed at all, so I'm happy to see him in this video.

Another Sophia Myles Interview!

We have another good interview with Sophia Myles to enjoy. I'm glad she is getting attention! :) This time, it is Daemon's TV providing good information for us. We have read a few of the questions and responses before, but Sophia also goes into more details in some areas. She clears up whether or not trivia that was written about her is correct. I've always wondered if the little tidbits you read about stars on certain websites are true or not. Sophia, again, brings up her wonderful friendship with Shannyn Sossamon & her desire to work with her more in the future. Even when a reporter asks about working with Jason Dohring, she brings it back to Shannyn.

Last week, SOPHIA MYLES, who plays reporter Beth Turner in CBS’ MOONLIGHT, took some time to speak with a few reporters.

Sophia Myles comes from England and is thus part of what we call this season’s British Invasion, not that we are complaining.

Q : What is in store for Beth when the show comes back?

Sophia Myles : Well I don’t know yet until the strike is over. I’m not sure and it’s very exciting. I mean I think you’ll see in the final episode, talk about leaving the audience hanging. When I read the script, you just want to know more and I think there’s definitely a story for us still to tell. I won’t be satisfied if we don’t come back and make anymore, but we’ll see.

Q : Have you seen any preliminary ideas or anything?

Sophia Myles : No, everyone’s speculating, everyone’s excited. We’re just waiting, waiting for the strike to lift, but just having won the people’s choice awards and Alex, I’ve just been told that Alex has been voted the sexiest man (one of the sexiest stars on TV) by TV Guide, and we love making it so much and people seem to really love it. It’s all very optimistic.

Q : There’s been a few different executive producers on “Moonlight” since it was first presented at Comic Con, are you surprised how well everything turned out?

Sophia Myles : Yeah. (laughs) I’m baffled because it’s like, it’s strange, Moonlight is such a force to be reconned with, because I had no idea what I was getting myself involved with coming over here making this show. I kind of saw a pilot that they had shot before and I didn’t know if it had any life. I didn’t know and it has been this organic thing that A) refuses to die and B) it just gets stronger and stronger, and I think more and more powerful and sexy and exciting each show. So bring it on. I think there needs to be more.

Q : What attracts you to a role? What kind of qualities to you look for in a role or a script?

Sophia Myles : If I want to go on the adventure, you know, if I read the story and I want to go to that world and experience that. It’s as simple as that. I think I’m a storyteller, it’s like, am I interested in this guy on this journey and can I kind of bring something to this that’s gonna make it even better than what’s already on the page? What’s my part in this? I don’t know, I like to play strong women. It’s hard to find really good roles for women, so I like to play females that are really well written and not just written for men, not just written to be just the sex object because that’s boring and lots of people can do that. I’m interested in the workings of the female mind.

Daemon’s TV : As an actor how do you prepare for parts?

Sophia Myles : You know I am like the most non-method person for acting. I kind of figure it out as I go along. You start thinking about it once you’ve read the script. It kind of helps once you see the costume or meet the costume designer. It’s a collaborative thing you see, it’s not just me creating Beth Turner, there’s somebody who designs her clothes, then there’s my make-up artist, there’s hairstylists, and then there’s the set designer who designs her apartment. If you think about it, someone’s apartment is as important, it tells you a lot about a character so it’s kind of a cumulative, collaborating thing rather.

Q : In your “Doctor Who” episode you play a very interesting woman also where you’re in love with an immortal, is that something that attracted you to the “Moonlight” role?

Sophia Myles : I never thought about that actually and I realized only recently there are a lot of parallels between the Moonlight story and that Doctor Who episode, “The Girl in the Fireplace,” actually. But no, I hadn’t thought about that at the time.

Daemon’s TV : Can you tell us how you got the part of Beth?

Sophia Myles : Yeah, I was written a letter from the producers of the show and Joel Silver’s people basically asking me to come and do it and so I kind of couldn’t really believe it at first, I didn’t think that it was legitimate just because I couldn’t believe that I would be offered something so magical like this out right without auditioning or anything. But they had already made a pilot and then they were kind of recasting and changing everything around and they were going to kind of reshoot the pilot. So I just was so intrigued by the opportunity to come and be in Los Angeles already with a job, you know, paid to come and do a fabulous job working at Warner Brothers. I mean I couldn’t say no really, I would have been an absolute idiot. So I was just kind of interested in the kind of adventure of it all, it sounded so different to me, and that’s how it happened.

Q : You’ve had quite a few roles in genre title, “Underworld,” “Doctor Who,” “Moonlight,” are you a fan of sci-fi or horror?

Sophia Myles : I love sci-fi, I don’t know about horror. Horror freaks me out, like I’m not gonna watch any of it because I just get terrified and then can’t sleep on my own you know, stupid. And vampires, I can take or leave them. I like science fiction, anything kind of other planets and all that kind of stuff, I like that.

Q : With Josh now dead, was it something you were surprised at how quickly within the first nine episodes the love triangle has been evaporated?

Sophia Myles : No, I thought for a long time especially after Beth and Mick had kissed, I was saying to the producers “come on guys, she needs to deal with this, morally be a good girl and she’s gonna need to be honest with Josh and end it or stop hanging out with Mick.” You know you can’t really send him off on vacation, that’s not really dealing with it, because he disappeared for a few episodes if you remember, and then he was back. So when they finally did end the relationship, I mean I thought it was a little extreme killing him, but there you go. But I’m glad, I mean not that I’m glad he’s dead obviously especially for Jordan Belfi, the actor who played him, but I’m relieved in a sense that that kind of dilemma is gone, it makes it so exciting and kind of deep now because it’s such a huge thing, I mean it’s really traumatic what’s happened to her.

Q : What has been your favorite project to be a part of?

Sophia Myles : Well, so many I mean if you say favorite in terms of the film that I think is the best as a finished piece or the film that I loved working on the most. “Tristan + Isolde” was such a magical experience, the scenery and working in Ireland, just completely took my breath away. And then I had a great time on “Thunderbirds.” I love being on films, I love making films, like I love my job, so kind of all of them for different reasons. but the best ones are when you really luck out and you work with great people. Working with Alex O’Loughlin for example, that’s such a joy of Moonlight, and then I loved working with Jamie Bell. I did a film with him that’s coming out this year in the United States. It’s a film I did with Jamie Bell, directed by David Mackenzie, and it’s called “Hallam Foe.” It’s the name of the central character, and that’s really interesting. Then another film called “Outlander” with James Caviezel, John Hurt, and Ron Perlman. It’s set in 709 AD and this alien ship crash lands on planet earth. It’s kind of a science fiction slash period drama, very interesting. I play a viking warrior princess in that one. And in the other one, the Jamie Bell film, I play a hotel manager in Scotland.

Daemon’s TV : How would describe the atmosphere on the set on Moonlight?

Sophia Myles : It’s funny, it’s a family. We have our good days and we have our bad days, but when it’s good, it’s amazing. There’s a lot of laughter, it’s infectious. I think because there’s such talented people working on this show across the board everyone, all the actors are really strong, the directors are fantastically creative, everyone’s clever so there’s a really great creative sets. We’re a good one.

Q : Were you surprised with the finale? Is it a good cliffhanger?

Sophia Myles : They leave you hanging. I’ve just seen the last scene, I haven’t seen the whole episode yet, but yeah it’s left totally open ended and utterly unsatisfactory as far as I’m concerned. There must be more episodes of Moonlight given the way that we leave it.

Q : Have you guys pretty much written off the rest of the season because of the strike?

Sophia Myles : I have no idea, I’m just waiting now. We’re all kind of very excited because we just won the People’s Choice Awards, it’s great fan base. As soon as the strike lifts I think we’re all hoping that we, you know, off we go again, so fingers crossed. Well if they’re not I’m going to be going knocking on to somebody’s door at CBS. I really hope that we make more.

Daemon’s TV : I read a few trivia facts on your imdb page and I was curious to know if they were true. It says that you listen to Tracy Chapman, that your favorite movie is “The Goonies,” and that you speak German and French. Is any of that true?

Sophia Myles : No, I don’t necessarily speak German and French. I can understand German pretty well. I haven’t spoken it for years though. French no, that’s not true. I can understand though if somebody was being rude about me in French or German. And the same goes with Italian, if someone was rude about me I’d know. “The Goonies,” no. I mean I’ve got lots of different favorite films so I would say no that’s not really true, but I do love it, it’s one of my favorite childhood films. And yeah, I like Tracy Chapman but I like a lot of other stuff. Other music, I’m quite into Snow Patrol at the moment.

Q : You don’t get to work a lot with Jason Dohring, are you hoping that would change when the show comes back?

Sophia Myles : Yeah it would be nice. Jason’s great, he’s really cool. He’s a nice guy so yeah it would be great. I want to work with Shannyn (Sossamon) though, she’s who I really want to work with.

Q : Why do you want to work with Shannyn Sossamon?

Sophia Myles : I think she’s great. I was a fan of her ages ago. I was really excited when I found out she was on the show. I loved her from “Knight’s Tale,” I just think she’s great, she’s gorgeous. She’s my friend now so it’d be fun. We laugh a lot.

The TV Addict has a great interview with Sophia Myles. A few of the questions are familiar, but it is still nice to see more reporters talking to her. After numerous re-casts, re-shoots and behind-the-scenes drama, actress Sophia Myles is as surprised as anyone that MOONLIGHT has done so well. Yet six months and one People’s Choice Award later, here she is. Kind enough to take some time out of her, well, not so busy schedule [courtesy of the Writer’s Guild of America Strike] to talk to a group of reporters via conference call about MOONLIGHT’S jaw-dropping season finale airing [January 18th, 2008] at 9PM on CBS (CTV in Canada).

The TV Addict : So honestly, after such an inauspicious start, are you surprised things have turned out so well for MOONLIGHT?

Sohia Myles : It’s definitely strange that MOONLIGHT has become such a force. I had no idea, coming over from here [from England], making the show, that it would have any life. But it’s become this organic thing that refuses to die. It seems to be getting stronger and stronger and more powerful with each episode.

Q : How was it you were cast in MOONLIGHT?

Q : As an actor, how do you get into character?

Sophia Myles : I am the most non-method person you will ever meet. I kind of figure it out as I go along. The incredible costume designer, hairstylist, makeup artists and set designers really help me out as well. You can tell a lot about a character by their apartment.

Q : Talk about your tremendous chemistry with co-star Alex O’Loughlin. Can you predict something like that?

Sophia Myles : It’s absolutely luck and the most wonderful thing. It’s the gift you wish for as a producer. If there was a formula for chemistry, every show would be a it show. But all I know, is that in twelve years of working, I’ve had a lot of co-stars and some people you click with, some people you don’t. We just happen to be really lucky, a fantastic due, we make each other better. It’s like playing a really good game of tennis, we raise each other’s game.

Q : And off the camera?

Sophia Myles : Our relationship out of character is based on humor. We laugh our asses of. If you were to film us off set, it would make a funnier and better show than MOONLIGHT. [Editor’s note: Here’s hoping the off-the-set antics are included as DVD Bonus material]

It must make for a very fun set?

Sophia Myles : Our set is like a family. We have our good days and our bad. When it’s good, it’s amazing. We have such talented people working on the board. Everyone’s so clever, so creative.

The TV Addict : Were you surprised that the writer’s killed Josh so soon into the show’s run?

Sophia Myles : After Mick and Beth kissed, I kept saying, come on guys, she’s got to morally be a good girl, be honest and end it with Josh. So when it finally ended, well — I felt it was a little extreme killing the poor guy — but I’m relieved in the sense that the dilemma is gone from her life. It also makes the Mick and Beth relationship that much more exciting and deep.

Q : What’s in store for season 2?

Sophia Myles : I won’t know until the strike is over. There are no new scripts.

The TV Addict : Between yourself, TERMINATOR’S Lena Headey, UGLY BETTY’s Ashley Jensen and Michelle Ryan’s BIONIC WOMAN, the British are quietly taking over Hollywood. What do you attribute the recent British invasion to?

Sophia Myles : Really there is no work in England, it’s rubbish! I’ve known Anna Friel [PUSHING DAISIES] for a while and since we’re the same age, we’ve kept up via telephone. We leave each-other Meltdown Messages, “You’ll never believe what they made me do today!”

Q : Can you elaborate on the differences between working in the US versus the UK?

Sophia Myles : One thing is the hours. They really work you hard. Six days a week, sixteen hours a day on a tough day. You’re working pretty much all the time. In England there’s a lot of sitting around, drinking cups of tea and waiting. In America it’s go-go-go!

Q : Like your character Beth, you’ve been thrust into a pretty scary situation. New job, new country Personally what’s your biggest fear?

Sophia Myles : The ocean scares me, white sandy bottoms are okay, but when it gets too deep and murky it feels like a swimming pool with sharks. Human beings also scare me a lot more than vampires!

Q : Human beings with cameras perhaps! Have you encountered the Hollywood Paparazzi?

Sophia Myles : I think it’s absolutely fascinating. But I’m not part of that scene and never want to be. No one that is being followed by the paparazzi have not started it. It just doesn’t happen. It’s a two-sided relationship. It’s very easy to stay well clear if you don’t open your mouth. If I talk to the press, I’m talking about my work. I’m not talking about what I did on a Friday night.

It’s sad when young girls aren’t protected by their families or don’t have close adult confidents. It’s a very scary beast. Poor old Britney, it’s a whole new thing. A horde of men with cameras following around a young mother. That didn’t happen even five years ago.

New Online Interview with Sophia Myles

Jennifer Squires Biller, from Tube Talk, has a wonderful new interview with Sophia Myles. This is great because we do not get to hear from her as often as Alex O'Loughlin.

I just got off the phone with Sophia Myles, or as you know her, Beth, the vampire-friendly reporter on the CBS hit drama Moonlight.

She was delightful and downright giddy at the success of the show, as she chatted with a few reporters during the conference call.

I tried several times to get Myles to spill some details about this Friday’s episode, that shows Coraline in the promos (yay!) but Myles was as tight lipped as a vampire sucking blood. She didn’t want to spoil us.

Myles has a lengthy resume that includes film and television roles in Tristan and Isolde, Underworld, Extras, Doctor Who and many more.

For those of you who don’t know, Myles is from across the pond and has a lovely British accent. In short, she sounds very different from the Beth we’ve come to know. Here’s a rundown of what Myles had to say. (Just picture her answers with a British accent and it’s all the more entertaining.)

Jennifer : What can you tell us about this Friday’s episode?

Sophia : The last two are so powerful. Talk about leaving you hanging. I don’t want to spoil it. We need to do more.

Jennifer : The last time Beth saw Coraline things did not end well. Will we get to see any resolution from the stabbing scene?

Sophia : It’s complicated. But it’s great that it’s so complicated. I love Shannyn Sossamon dearly. I want to see her at work. That’s all I’m going to say.

Jennifer : I think many of the fans of the show are shocked that you have a British accent; you do the American one so well. Do you work with a vocal coach?

Sophia : When I first landed here I worked with someone. I’d played American before so (I had some experience with the American accent.) I’m living here, and I’m hearing it all the time, so it’s got easier. I was very jet lagged in the first episode so I can hear it (in it.)

Jennifer : Where would you like the series to go?

Sophia : I feel like I’m on the roller coaster that I didn’t really look at before I got on it. I don’t want it to stop just yet. Who knows? It could go any which way.

Q : Discuss the chemistry between you and Alex.

Sophia : It’s absolutely luck. It’s like the gift you wish for. If there was a formula you could produce, then every show would be a hit show. I’ve had a lot of costars and leading men, but it’s like normal life. Some people you click with, and some you don’t. We make the other one better. It’s like playing a really good game of tennis everyday. Out of character, Alex and Sophia, our relationship is based on humor, and we laugh our asses off. If you filmed us off screen it would make an even better show than Moonlight. It’s hilarious.

Q : Did Beth really want Mick to turn Josh into a vampire after he died?

Sophia : There was so much unfinished business because she’s been having an emotional affair with Mick. I just think she didn’t want him to die in that moment. I think if she thought about it, turning him would have been a mistake, but she just didn’t want him to go in that moment. Getting involved with a vampire. You’re taking on a lot! (laughter)

Q : Did you research vampires for the part?

Sophia : I’ve been learning as I go along. I’m not the world’s biggest vampire fan; I can take them or leave them. I’ve learned about the mythology, as I’ve been doing the show. I play Beth as somebody who doesn’t know anything about it because she doesn’t really know much about them. Can they have sex? I think I ask all the normal questions that people ask. (laughter)

Q : Is there a master plan for where the show is going or do you know (where the character is going?)

Sophia : That’s what’s fascinating about this show. It’s been an organic process. It’s literally evolved day in and day out. It’s quite scary doing it that way. Week to week, no one knows what the hell is going on. But it works.

Q : What are you doing in the interim (during the downtime due to the writer’s strike.)

Sophia : I spent Christmas here (in L.A.) A puppy (Jackson) was given to me by someone and there’s a six-month law before he can travel (overseas.) Southern California is beautiful in the winter. I just stayed here with Jackson. I went to the beach on Christmas Day. It was wonderful.

Q : Do you have a favorite cuisine you’ve discovered here?

Sophia : You can’t get good Mexican food anywhere in London. I love that about LA. Great Mexican food. And the SKOR chocolate bars are lovely. We cannot get them in London. The food is great.

Q : Will they get to see the show in the UK?

Sophia : Yes, it’s going to the UK on February 18. I’m excited for England that they’re going to see us. There’s something about Moonlight. People just love it. It’s such great escapism.

Sophia : I love being part of the show. It’s such an adventure. I’m getting really frustrated; I want this writers strike to finish.

For me, being part of this show has been incredible. I never knew what I was getting involved in. It’s evolved. They offered me this job. I had 24 hours. I left London and came here. It just started to evolve. Alex and I have such a rapport together. The “McBeth” thing, as the fans like to call it, just developed, as we’ve gone along.

Discussing Beth Turner : I feel like I really get her now. I love it when they write humor into it for the two of us because Alex and I love comedy. I don’t like it when they give me a gun. It makes me very uncomfortable.
