CBS boss weighs in on Moonlight’s possible RESURRECTION

Uplifting news today, my friends! Matt Mitovich asked Nina Tassler about the possible return of Moonlight. She admits to discussing it with Joel Silver recently! Also, not surprisingly, Tassler says CBS wants to hang onto Alex O'Loughlin.

I find it funny that she makes the exact same point we've been screaming since our series was canceled........ Namely, CBS could have been in the forefront of the Vampire craze with an established show, amazing cast & writers, and a hugely popular leading man in Alex! Instead, they made the unbelievable decision to cancel Moonlight *sigh*

You have done such an excellent job of keeping Moonlight alive in the thoughts of entertainment reporters/bloggers, network exes, Silver Productions, Warner Bros, etc etc. Demonstrating how loyal and dedicated Moonlight fans are to our show! I am so proud of you :)

Will CBS jump on the bloodsucking bandwagon and bring ‘Moonlight‘ back to life?

Sources tell Fancast that one of the former vampire drama’s producers and a few original cast members have been approached by CBS and producer Warner Bros. TV about making another go of it.

And really, who could blame CBS for now second-guessing its decision to snuff the series two years ago, given the success of the ‘Twilight’ movies, HBO’s ‘True Blood‘ and now The CW’s ‘Vampire Diaries‘?

Fancast asked CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler about the latest buzz, and whether ‘Moonlight 2.0′ could serve as a means to keep the very popular Alex O’Loughlin on the network’s payroll.

“I just want to say one thing – who was out there first with vampires?” she at first responded. “Who was out there first?”

So…? Might Mick St. John resurface for another “bite”?

“['Moonlight' executive producer] Joel Silver and I were talking about it the other day – but we talk about a lot of things,’ Tassler told us. Any possible ‘Moonlight’ rebirth would be a ways down the line, however, seeing as “we’re about to pick up all of our [2010-11 season] pilots,” Tassler stressed.

One way or another, CBS is determined to find a new project for Alex O’Loughlin, whose ‘Three Rivers’ has been canceled, Tassler confirmed on Saturday.

“We love [Alex] and want him to stay around for a long time,” she said.

As for why the organ donation-themed medical drama failed to draw an adequate audience despite the Aussie actor’s ardent and vocal following, she offered, “‘Moonlight’ was a much more [O'Loughlin]-centric show, whereas ‘Three Rivers’ was more of an ensemble.” She then added, “Some shows find their legs earlier than others.”

Do you want Alex O'Loughlin on the NCIS spinoff show?

Matt Mitovich recently reported that CBS is definitely going to air a spin-off of their current show, NCIS. This was confirmed by Nina Tassler. He went on to speculate about Alex O'Loughlin being cast on NCIS Part 2 due to the talent holding deal Alex signed with CBS. Matt wants to know how the fans feel about that idea. Do you want Alex O'Loughlin to appear on the new NCIS spinoff show? I can answer that without hesitation........ NO! I think he deserves to star in his very own series, especially since the details I've heard thus far sound really good.

You can never have too much of a good thing. Having proven that with a string of successful CSIs, CBS now is looking to capitalize on NCIS' strongest season ever by spinning a new series off of what was essentially a JAG spin-off.

"It's happening. We're doing it," CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler confirmed Wednesday at the TCA Winter Press Tour. "We've seen an outline. We're in great shape, and we're just waiting to get the script. But we're going to cast, and we're going to shoot."

It's yet to be cast, you say? Here's a provocative thought. CBS long ago inked a development deal with Alex O'Loughlin, who had cultivated quite a fan following as the star of the (too) short-lived Moonlight. Perhaps the Aussie hunk could return to the fore as the front man for NCIS 2? Asked separately about the status of O'Loughlin's deal with the Eye, Tassler said, "Hopefully we will [see him soon]."

As for the origin of the NCIS spin-off — which, sources say, will simply follow the cases of a team situated elsewhere — Tassler said that just as the Mark Harmon starrer "was [born of] an episode of JAG, this will be an episode of NCIS" airing later this season.

In this video, TV Week's Josef Adalian interviews Nina Tassler (President of CBS Entertainment) at the Television Critics Association Tour. The chat took place before the official announcement of Alex O'Loughlin's talent holding deal.

When asked about keeping Alex, she says "Nothing concrete. We've talked to him in the past. I have a great relationship with him. But, its someone we hold in very high regard. So, its someone I'd like to work with... absolutely."

Nina, again, states that she loves Vampire shows.

"Message to Moonlight fans ~ .... I'm incredibly grateful and appreciative... They're loyal and passionate... We can not dismiss how passionate and enthusiastic fans are about their favorite tv characters and about their tv shows. So, I'm totally fine with their passion and enthusiasm."

Okay so first things first : I don’t really know much about Moonlight. From what I understand it was a new series of CBS last season, it got canceled already, and many fans are pissed. Was it actually good ? No idea. What is it about ? Except for that it might be about “a vampire P.I.” I don’t know, because I never watched. These things just happen you know, many new series on the air, choices must be made, and sometimes you just don’t even try one of those new shows…

Anyways, I was just reading about CBS President Nina Tassler comments on why they canceled Moonlight and why it’s alright, where she said that pretty much fans weren’t fans of the show, but the actors starring in it. As she explains it, unlike with Jericho where people love(d) the show, here it was just about people. “I spent a lot of time looking the blogs and the website. Look, I don’t want to say Moonlight fans weren’t fans of the show. They were. But in sort of sifting through all of it (the e-mails, etc.) it was very much about ‘our vampire, Alex (O’Loughlin).’” I read that, and I just had to ask : are there really any such fans out there, who didn’t care about the show, only the actor(s) ??

I’m asking because that just feels like a cheap thing to say, trying to justify the cancellation. Listen, back in the days there was a show called Ally McBeal, and had it been canceled I’m sure people would have yelled to get “Ally” back, because they wanted their favorite lawyer with the shortest mini-skirts ever on TV. But that didn’t mean they didn’t care about the show, or the other characters, not at all.

Should Fox decide to cancel House right now, I can see millions of angry fans asking for the return of America’s favorite doctor, the great Hugh Laurie. Now don’t mistake that statement as to mean they’d just want Hugh Laurie back on the air, they’d want him as House, they’d want him with all his team members (well, maybe not all of them, but…), they’d want him with Wilson and Cuddy.

We call him House, we call him Hugh, same difference when it comes to what we’re talking about here : it’s the guy, the character he portrays, and the show it all happens in. Just because fans would praise for their favorite vampire slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, didn’t mean they weren’t really talking about Buffy, the show, not just the character.

Somehow I feel this was the same here, Hell even Tassler said they asked for “their vampire” back. Now unless you go on and tell me that Alex O’Loughlin is actually a vampire, for real, which I would find very cool though demand undeniable proofs before accepting that idea, I think those fans meant him as Mick St. John, the vampire from Moonlight, and by extension they meant the show.

So, am I wrong, are there really any such fans out there, who didn’t care about the show, or the characters, only the actor(s) ??

Nina Tassler comments on canceling Moonlight

Hello all.... On Friday, I read comments Nina Tassler made regarding Moonlight. This was reported by several sources who attended the 2008 Television Critics Association Press Tour. I've posted examples below. After reading what Tassler had to say, I had many thoughts streaming thru my head (I know you will also). I wanted to at least attempt to get those thoughts in order before posting this for you.

As you know, when I started my Moonlight blog I shared with you that I was already writing, emailing and calling CBS in support of our show. I was very aware of the fact that Moonlight was not the "normal" series and needed its fans to be heard. I asked you all to do that same. You joined the campaign with such wonderful enthusiasm. :) We continued communicating with the network right through the cancelation of Moonlight.

I can not begin to count the number of emails and comments I received from Moonlight fans who were contacting CBS. Lots of you even posted the messages you sent to them for all of us to read here on the blog. The notes got our point across but were dignified, polite and gracious... even after we learned that our show had been canceled. Just like the messages we have seen and heard from Trevor Munson, Alex O'Loughlin, Jason Dohring, etc.

One thing Nina Tassler says is that the fan response to Moonlight is "actor-centric." We all know she is referring to Alex O'Loughlin. Of course, Alex is a huge draw! DUH! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a good thing? Don't you hire a leading man to do precisely that?

I was an Alex fan long before Moonlight. However, that is not the only reason that I am addicted. The vast majority of the messages I sent to CBS were about how fantastic the show is... the writers... the entire cast. You also shared with us that you did the same. We all know that MickBeth was the topic of innumerable letters, voicemails, emails and such.

Even if we were tuning in just to see Alex as Mick St John, since when is that a problem? Most television executives don't care WHY you are watching their show. They only care that your eyeballs are on their network and not some place else. It's about ratings leading to ad revenue.

In my opinion, the comments are simply an attempt at damage control. TPTB do not like to admit that they are wrong. I know you are shocked by that ~ *wink*

I'm happy to see that the entertainment reporters are still asking about Moonlight. Most canceled shows do not receive this kind of sustained attention in the media. That is because you have been doing an amazing job of keeping our show alive!

Sorry about the long winded post. I'm stopping myself now! I took the extra time to organize my thoughts so that I wouldn't ramble on. That didn't quite work out :)

The point of these events is to give visiting TV critics a chance to mingle with and interview actors, producers and network executives; people you either haven’t seen during the formal press conferences during the day or haven’t had a chance to talk to. The point isn’t really to have fun, although some of the parties can be fun.

...CBS partnered with the CW and Showtime and went all out, busing us to the club Boulevard3 in Hollywood...

...I again tried to get into the club and this time succeeded. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in a strapless dress, was just outside the door; her publicist was rotating interviewers through on a 90-second time limit. Uh … no. Somebody handed me a glass of champagne (good) and a cone of french fries with rosemary mayonnaise (very good), but it was hard to walk without spilling on myself. After the crowd outside, the club was almost empty. That gave me a chance to talk to Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, who told me the “Moonlight” supporters had sent her red wine, and that she actually tried a bottle, but it was terrible. Although she had to cancel “Moonlight,” she said, she wouldn’t rule out another project for its star, Alex O’Loughlin.

THE SKINNY: While MOONLIGHT has faded into the darkness, it was still important to check in with CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler at today’s TCA press tour about any final words on the series which starred Alex O’Laughlin as vamp Mick St. John.

“Everybody knows I love vampires, witches, werewolves, warlocks – I love them all,” says Tassler. “The response to MOONLIGHT was actually more actor-centric. So I think it certainly measures our decision on the show. Like I said, I don’t question the choice we made. I’m not getting as much mail and most of those comments were actor-centric.

So does that mean CBS would hire O’Loughlin in a heartbeat?

“Sure,” says Tassler. “We’d love to.”

I did talk to CBS president Nina Tassler last week at the CBS upfront about the cancellation of Moonlight, a show so many fans loved passionately, and she defended the decision, saying, "Once we got back up on the air it was about the numbers and the ratings, and we were just struggling a little bit. I loved the show. I personally love the show. I love working with Alex O'Loughlin and Joel Silver, and I just think we had to make some very tough decisions. It was hard." Not half as hard as it is for the fans who went to great lengths to save this series, Nina! Just sayin'! I'm also working on getting an exit interview with one of the stars or producers for later this week, so stand by.

Video ~ Nina Tassler says Moonlight canceled based on ratings

TV Week has a video interview with CBS President of Entertainment, Nina Tassler. Around the 1:05 mark of the clip, she talks about what led to Moonlight being canceled. She says, "It was a very hard decision... but it was based on the ratings." Our show has never been given the chance to run uninterrupted in order to gain even more viewers. It obviously means nothing to them that Moonlight managed to grow such a devoted and loyal fan base, and get around 8 million viewers DESPITE all the adversity it faced! Writer's Strike, never knowing if CBS was gonna schedule a new episode or a repeat, reruns airing then yanked for 3 months, being a freshman show..... on and on.....

CBS wants more female fans?!?! HELLO!

Something has been bothering me ever since I read it in Variety.........

"This year, CBS Entertainment prexy Nina Tassler said her mandate was less flashy: Focus on growing the Eye's laffers, soften up its procedurals and bring more women to the network."

and

"Tassler said the network even talked with creators about taking male roles and reconceiving them for women."

You want more female viewers, but you cancel Moonlight?!??! How in the world does that make sense? So frustrating! *sigh*

Nina Tassler talks about Moonlight fans after officially announcing that our show has been cancelled by CBS. Per Variety, she said......

Gone are "Cane," "Jericho," "Kid Nation," "Moonlight," "Shark," "Viva Laughlin" and "Welcome to the Captain."

Tassler said she’s bracing for the onslaught of “Moonlight” supporters, but added she learned a lot from her recent “Jericho” experience: Bringing back a show because of a rabid fan campaign doesn’t necessarily mean the ratings will follow.

I like that she seems to be happy with the fact that our show was number one in its time slot almost every week.

Will CBS be less likely to renew a show with passionate fans but low ratings in the wake of “Jericho”? “Moonlight” looks like it could, sooner or later, turn into a similar situation.

One thing “Moonlight” has going for it is it wins its time period. Unlike “Jericho,” “Moonlight” is not serialized. Moonlight was a presentation (rather than a pilot). By the time the strike hit, we were still making certain discoveries and exploring new ideas and the show’s mythology.

We have been waiting for and dying to see promotion of Moonlight. Our show needs and deserves it. The time has come! Public appearances by our lovely cast, great Eyelab videos and now this incredible CBS tv commercial. *cheer* We need to be sure to thank them for this. I have already called & sent emails to Nina, Les and Audience Services, as well as leaving happy feedback on the CBS website. Also, I'm sending snail mail because they often consider that to be more sincere. You are such thoughtful folks, I'm sure that many of you have done the same. Just mentioning it because we definitely want to encourage the network to continue promoting Moonlight :)

Sorry that Jericho has been canceled :(

As we have heard and been discussing, CBS has officially canceled Jericho. I am so sorry to hear the news! Talk about great fans.... many of which are also huge Moonlight fans. Perhaps there will be a Jericho movie. I've also heard rumors about the show being picked up by a cable tv channel.

Nina Tassler issued the following statement ~

We have read your emails over the past few days and have been touched by the depth and passion with which you have expressed your disappointment. Please know that canceling a television series is a very difficult decision. Hundreds of people at the Network, the production company and the incredibly-talented creative team worked very hard to build and serve the community for this show -- both on-air and online. Thank you for supporting Jericho with such passion. We truly appreciate the commitment you made to the series and we are humbled by your disappointment. In the coming weeks, we hope to develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the Jericho story.

For its six episodes (the series finale will be its seventh), Jericho averaged 6.8 million viewers. The finale airs on March 25th.

This just highlights something we all know.... ratings are a must to keep our show on the air. We need to not only promote Moonlight online but continue reaching out to people in the "real" world. :) CBS is waiting to see what kind of viewer numbers our next four new episodes pull in before deciding on Moonlight's future.

Donating to the Alliance for Children's Rights in honor of Moonlight and Nina Tassler

The Alliance for Children's Rights is an amazing charity. It offers many much needed programs such as health care, special education, mentoring, court advocacy for abused & abandoned kids, assistance with adoption and for those exiting the foster care system. When I think of the children who have nothing and nobody, it breaks my heart.

Of course, you are aware that Nina supported Moonlight from the beginning. She has famously been quoted as saying she was "smitten" with Alex O'Loughlin the first time she met him. Who isn't?!? *wink*

Emailing is great.... however, sending postcards and letters has a lot of impact. Even though it only takes a few minutes to write & stick a stamp on a postcard, the network knows more effort is involved than sending email at 3am. ha! They think it is a sign of really dedicated fans. Show them how devoted Moonlight fans are to our show! Keep our messages polite, well written and to the point.

We have almost made it through the first week of no Moonlight, only two more to go! Think happy thoughts... think happy thoughts....

Let's put this long break to positive use. Write &/or call CBS in support of our show! Sending email is a good thing, but actual letters and cards piling up makes even more of a statement. Postcards are often effective because the message can be seen immediately instead of needing to be opened first. Also, this is Christmas card time. It is easy to add one (or ten) for the network to your list. :)

As I mentioned previously, Ms Tassler said "Oh, I love my vampire!" and admitted to being "smitten" with Alex. "Alex is so warm and genuine and such a wonderfully talented actor. We had seen his episodes of 'The Shield,' and he's got such great charisma and is so unassuming in his crazy good looks that he just endears himself to you." We do not want her to forget why she was impressed with Moonlight to begin with or to change her mind.

A few thoughts.... please, keep your message clear and to the point. Eight page fan speak loaded letters can be off-putting. No threatening, name calling and so on. Who wants to read negative, rude mail?! I know you wouldn't do anything like that. :) We want CBS to have positive thoughts of Moonlight and its fans. Let them know how much we love our show, and appreciate them airing it for us. If you have shopped with the companies that advertise during Moonlight, be sure to mention that. We can write directly to the advertisers and thank them for choosing to run their commercials during Moonlight.

Contact CBS & Nina Tassler In Support Of Moonlight!

You may be wondering who this lovely lady is pictured above. She is Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment. When Jericho was cancelled, their fans went to work, famously sending pounds and pounds of peanuts to the CBS offices. Ms Tassler is the one who decided to renew Jericho after all.

I have read quotes from Ms Tassler about Moonlight in several articles. Here is an excerpt from her interview with Maria Elena Fernandez and the Los Angeles Times Newspaper regarding our show ~

"Oh, I love my vampire!" CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler said recently, beginning a conversation about her network's new drama, "Moonlight." Other networks might have postponed the series or decided not to air it, but Tassler, who says she's always had "affection for the vampire character" and admits she was "smitten" by star Alex O'Loughlin the first time she met him, remains steadfast.

"You have to remember that this is under the auspices of Joel Silver and we've got a lot riding on Joel," Tassler said. "As you continue to work on a show, if I still feel inspired, and I feel they are making exciting choices, then our enthusiasm remains. This is not a perfect science. It's an evolutionary process."

Although CBS has not picked up a full season of episodes, Tassler ordered four more scripts a few weeks ago."I am pleased," she said. "I am encouraged. I know we have great episodes ahead. It's an interesting season. It's a marathon, not a sprint."

As we know, the show was completely recast except for Alex. The reporter asked Ms Tassler if they ever considered replacing him also ~

"No, no, no, no," Tassler said. "Mick St. John was Alex O'Loughlin. Alex is so warm and genuine and such a wonderfully talented actor. We had seen his episodes of 'The Shield,' and he's got such great charisma and is so unassuming in his crazy good looks that he just endears himself to you."

Sounds like Alex casts his spell on everyone!

While what she has said in the past seems encouraging, we do not know what she & the rest of the executives are thinking now. I'm sure you have also read that Moonlight's producer, Joel Silver, said "it will kill us" when asked how the writer's strike could affect the show. :(

I suggest that we contact Ms Tassler! Writing letters, emailing and calling. Thank her for previously supporting our show, and ask her to continue to do so. Also, show her what an extensive and LOYAL fan base Moonlight has grown in such a short amount of time. CBS needs to see that we are dedicated to keeping our show on the air!
