Word is that Alex O'Loughlin has been added to the cast of the film, S. Darko. It's the sequel to Donnie Darko ~ Jake Gyllenhaal's 2001 movie. No details yet about what character Alex will be playing, or how big his part is in the flick. Production began on May 18th. Since Alex & Holly are on vacation in Mexico, his role must not require him to be on the set from day one. S Darko is currently scheduled to premiere in 2009.
Also reported as joining the cast is Justin Chatwin, who you may remember was in The Invisible with Alex.
Richard Kelly, the writer & director of the original movie, is not involved with the sequel.
Here is the movie plot synopsis courtesy of Slash Film.....
The sequel follows Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha Darko, a role reprised by Daviegh Chase. The story picks up seven years after the first film and Donnie’s death when his now 18-year-old sister Samantha and her best friend Corey go on a roadtrip to Los Angeles, where along the way they are plagued by bizarre visions.

This is good for Alex but, I'm still grieving for Moonlight. Mick St. John and Beth Turner ...
Well I guess the first one launched Jake G, so depending on the role this might be a good thing for Alex, but any sequel not endorsed by the originators doesn't seem like a great career move at this point. Still, we do know Alex is attracted to Genre/Niche/Unusual roles.
I am not getting too depressed about this as a sign of his abandoning Moonlight as after all there is a summer break coming up and many actors manage even big roles as well as TV series... I just hope this is a good choice for him -- it doesn't feel like it somehow.
That's wonderful news, but what does it mean for Moonlight, are we fighting for nothing. This makes me worried.
Hmm...I'm skeptical. If this were true, wouldn't he be listed for it under the Internet Movie Database? Is there an article that mentions that? I'm still not willing to believe that Alex would take another role while Moonlight still has a chance.
I'm afraid I'm with Lyn on this. As much as I love Mr. O'Loughlin, there's no way I would see this movie seeing as I have no interest whatsoever in these type of movies.
And I also have to agree about the sequel thing. Sequels or tie-ins that have nothing to do with the original other than name are usually not wise moves though I am somehat comforted by Kate Beckinsale's involvement. IMDB lists this movie as being in post-production and Mr. O'Loughlin is listed as a cast member.
