News of Alex O'Loughlin's contract is spreading

Jane, at TV Squad, has written about her concerns regarding Alex O'Loughlin's one year contract with CBS.

Alex O'Loughlin inks deal with CBS...now if they could just create a show like Moonlight...
by Jane Boursaw

I can't decide if this is good news or bad news. Moonlight star Alex O'Loughlin is staying at CBS.

Unless you've been in another galaxy for the past year, you know that the Aussie actor cultivated an enormous fan base with his role as vampire P.I. Mick St. John on CBS' Moonlight. The uproar caused by the cancellation of the show in May can still be heard, well, in another galaxy.

At the Television Critics Association press tour in July, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the popularity of Moonlight was due in large part to O'Loughlin's fan base. So I can appreciate the fact that CBS wants to keep him around. But it's what they'll do with him that has me worried.

Under the one-year talent holding deal, O'Loughlin will star in a new series project for CBS to be developed by producer Mark Gordon, whose ABC Studio-based company is behind such series as ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Lifetime's Army Wives, and CBS' Criminal Minds.

It'll make my blood curl if they saddle him with some wimpy Grey's Anatomy-type show. I'm not dissing the show - I'm a huge fan, even during its crummiest seasons. But I'd hate to see O'Loughlin land in some milquetoast ensemble show when he clearly has the chops to headline a unique, fresh series.

You know, like Moonlight. Now if they could just create a show like that for him to star in...

What? Could I have possibly have read this correctly? Alex is staying at the Crap Broadcasting System where ANOTHER series is being created for him? I am sickened, stunned and saddened by this news. Kandeye thanks for your great website but I'm done with all of this. I'm sorry I ever watched Moonlight and got so hooked on it. . .

You know, I feel the same. I have never been "hooked" on a show before (not ever) but it happened to me with Moonlight and boy was I hooked. This has been such a hurtful experience that I find myself wishing the same thing. I only put it on my TIVO list to begin with because my husband is a vampire fan (which I never was) and then I was the one who got hooked. I really do find myself wishing I had never found it in the first place and had remained blissfully ignorant of everything that has gone on. Even listening to the music (which is all over my iPod) gives me a pang.

I wish this meant a new "re-vamped" (pun intended!) Moonlight was on the cards (because goodness knows they screwed it up the first time) but I can't see that happening.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it (still love it and rewatch it) but I wish I had never fallen so hard for it in the first place.

If the cancelation of Moonlight as NT said...was because it was actor-driven instead of show-driven, what makes her think this new show they're creating for him is going to be any different? I mean let's face it, we loooved Moonlight and miss it a lot but we also loved Alex, the man, the actor, his great charisma...and ok, his dashing sexy looks but who could resist him. To be honest, I'm a little aprehensive getting involved with his new show (but I'll watch it and can't wait to see him on TV again ;o)) and when we're really involved and hooked with the show, she is going to pull the rug from under us once again and blame it on the fanbase going wild with him and not the show. Mmm, I sincerely hope she learned her lesson and doesn't pull the same bone head move again, but then again we're talking about NT and CBS!

Why would they have cancelled a show whose ratings were doing so well? It got the PEOPLE's choice award. I would think the people's voice would be the most meaningful to keep a show on the air. I loved Mic and they should think about bringing the show back!
