Ratings for Battlestar Galatica

Battlestar Galatica aired right after Moonlight on Friday night. I know that many of you wanted to know their ratings for comparision. As I mentioned earlier, at 8:00 pm Central/9:00 pm Eastern Moonlight had 1.166 million viewers. Battlestar Galatica was watched by 1.717 million at 9:00 pm Central/10:00 pm Eastern.

Sci-Fi Channel sets up Moonlight web page

The Sci-Fi Channel has created an official Moonlight website. I know you will visit the page, but I encourage you to do so often. Reports are generated of how many hits each of their show's sites receive in order to get an idea of the popularity. We want Moonlight's home page to have huge numbers!

http://www.scifi.com/moonlight/

As I mentioned before, the SciFi Network also has set up a message board dedicated to Moonlight. Great place to say thank you for airing our show.... AND.... proudly display what a loyal, supportive band of fans the channel is gaining by doing so :)

Sci Fi Network message board dedicated to Moonlight

As I reported previously, the Sci-Fi Channel will begin airing reruns of Moonlight Season One on Friday, January 23rd, 2009. They have already set up a forum for fans to discuss the show :) Do you remember how long it took CBS to give our series its own message board when it originally aired? We had to wait for months even tho it was a first run program for CBS. I'm glad to see that Sci-Fi does not waste time. Let's be sure to thank them for bringing Mick, Beth, Coraline, Josef and the gang back to our television screens! And..... it couldn't hurt to tell the network how much we would love to see a Moonlight tv movie *wink*

TV Guide ~ SciFi Network to air Moonlight

A Moonlight fan wrote in to TV Guide regarding repeats of our show being shown on Sci-Fi beginning on January 23rd, 2009.

Today's News: Our Take
by Matt Mitovich and Mickey O'Connor

Question : Is it true that Moonlight is going to run on the Sci Fi Channel? OMG, that would be wonderful! — Tawny

Answer : MICKEY : Yes! We finally have some Alex O'Loughlin-related news for you, Tawny! Starting Jan. 23, Sci Fi will rerun the cancelled vampire drama on Fridays at 9 pm/ET (following repeats of ABC's similarly underappreciated Invasion). There, Moonlight will develop a small-but-vocal fan base, and then be promptly yanked from the schedule. Enjoy!

TV Guide ~ Question regarding CBS and ratings

Another concerned fan asks Matt Roush to try to explain how CBS looks at ratings when deciding its television programming & schedule.

Ask Matt

Question : I'm so frustrated! How many times do I watch a CBS show at 9 pm/ET on Friday after Ghost Whisperer and it gets cancelled? First, Close to Home, then Moonlight, and now The Ex List. Out of the three, Moonlight was the best, followed by Close to Home. The Ex List wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible TV. To me, it was better than watching Supernanny at that same time. My question is this: When will CBS get a show and leave it there? Why must CBS be so specific about ratings, and dump a show if it doesn't hold Ghost Whisperer's ratings? Is there any way for the suits at CBS to hear us "regular folks" who are actually the ones watching the shows? I just don't get it, but maybe it's because I'm not familiar with the way TV Networks work. It's just very frustrating. It almost makes you not want to watch anything anymore for fear it will be canceled. This 9 pm time slot on Friday on CBS is the worst. But I know there are other shows in danger of cancellation (Pushing Daisies, etc.). Why do they expect so much from "ratings?" — Mary M.

Matt Roush : This Friday time slot is the last tough nut for CBS to crack. (The network finally fixed its Tuesday 10 pm/ET problem, where shows had gone to die ever since Judging Amy packed it in, by moving Without a Trace there.) Simply put, ratings are the necessary evil by which the network business still functions. Even in these technologically transitional times, it's the measurement system by which shows live or die, and Fridays are particularly challenged as the viewing levels on the night continue to dwindle. Finding a show that fits between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs has proved particularly vexing, and going the supernatural or romantic-comedy route the last two seasons hasn't met CBS's expectations. (In retrospect, giving Moonlight a second season to develop might not have been such a bad idea.) I keep seeing speculation in the trades that plugging in the summer hit Flashpoint would make the most sense, and I guess we shouldn't expect anything else from CBS beyond yet another procedural hour.

The Ex List is no longer on the CBS schedule

Already........... CBS has pulled The Ex-List from its television schedule. Only four episodes have been shown thus far. All entertainment outlets are reporting that the action was caused by "lackluster" ratings. I do hate that this means more people ~ crew, cast & so on ~ are out of work.

Last Friday's episode finished in second place behind NBC's Crusoe (5.92 million) again. It also was 2nd in the demo. ABC's Supernanny was #1 in the demo with a 1.7/5 rating.

Ratings for The Ex-List episode on Friday, October 17th

For those who have asked, here are the Nielsen ratings for The Ex-List episode last night. The show was second in its time slot again this week. Over on NBC, the television premiere of the new series, Crusoe took 1st place. The Ex List was #1 in the demo for that time period.

CBS won the night with Ghost Whisperer & Numb3rs, as usual.

The Ex-List ratings for 2nd episode decline from premiere

I've received several emails asking how The Ex List did in the ratings last night. The numbers for its second episode actually declined from the premiere.... by over a million viewers. It also was in 2nd place during the time period, which was won by NBC's Deal or No Deal (with 6.52 million viewers). However, The Ex-List did take 1st place in the 18 to 49 demographic category.

TV Week ~ ‘Ex-List’ Can’t Top ‘Moonlight’

More media & entertainment sources are picking up on the fact that The Ex-List's ratings were much lower than Moonlight's debut numbers.

TV Week
‘Ex-List’ Can’t Top ‘Moonlight’

Baseball took some steam away from football on Sunday, while CBS’ Friday premiere of “The Ex List” failed to best “Moonlight’s” launch numbers.

On Friday, CBS debuted “The Ex List” (2.0/6) to moderate ratings. “List” declined 20% from the premiere of “Moonlight,” which previously held the time period. “Ghost Whisperer” (2.4/9) held steady from its year-to-year rating, while “Numb3rs” dipped 19%.

TV By The Numbers ~ the Ex-List disappoints

Friday Night Ratings: Ex-List disappoints
by Robert Seidman

Things keep getting worse for Friday nights. CBS won the night overall, but both the premiere of The Ex List and the return of Numb3rs must have been a little disappointing for the EYE network. The Ex List was down off the premiere of Moonlight a year ago, but Numb3rs was also down noticeably.

Despite the woes, CBS was the only network to have two shows place over 8 million viewers.

Moonlight Fans — I’m not sure this info is gloat-worthy, but I’m not sure it isn’t. There is no denying that Moonlight did have 8 million viewers in its premiere last year and that The Ex List didn’t. And although The Ex-List had slightly more 18-49 year old viewers than Moonlight’s finale, even in the finale, Moonlight drew 7.47 million. You can see last year’s numbers for Moonlight’s first-run airings here.

The Ex List premieres to lower ratings than Moonlight

Ratings news......... CBS' new show, The Ex List, premiered last night in Moonlight's former time slot. Guess what? The debut only managed to get 6.85 million viewers! Moonlight's pilot episode (No Such Thing as Vampires #1x01) premiered to 8.54 million watchers last year.

CBS network won the night.

Nielsen ratings, time shifted viewing and Friday night

Aside from Moonlight (I make time to see it live.... and then over & over again), we watch our television shows at our convenience. Either recording them for later viewing or watching them online. That is another reason why I feel that the Nielsen rating system is out of date. Lots of you have joined the ratings project by sending postcards to CBS letting them know we never miss an episode of Moonlight, but are not counted by Nielsen.

TV Guide's Matt Roush touches on this issue, as well as Friday night ratings in general. I could not agree more with this part ~ "I think CBS made a short-sighted error by scrapping Moonlight, undervaluing the buzz potential for the show and especially its star."

YES.... the Moonlight DVD set will be a huge seller! I'm already on the waiting list to get mine.

Roush on Moonlight

Question :
Along with millions of others, I'm a big fan of Moonlight. Although its ratings were not great, it usually won its timeslot on Friday night. I also realize Friday is not a big viewership night, but I think a lot more people were watching Moonlight than the Nielsen ratings indicate. From what I can tell, since it's on Friday night when many people are out on the town, it seems that many viewers DVR it and watch it the next day. Then there are the viewers who download full episodes, not to mention all the YouTube videos that fans make. I'm also willing to bet that when the DVD for Moonlight comes out, it will be a big seller. Are networks taking this non-traditional viewing into considersation when making renewal decisions? It seems the wave of the future. — Lisa W.

Matt Roush :
All of these off-network factors are coming into sharper focus as the networks make tough decisions on what to renew or not renew, but still for now, the bottom line is all about how the show is performing in a specific time period, and CBS has opted to go a different direction on Friday next season with the romantic-comedy The Ex List. I've gone on record that I think CBS made a short-sighted error by scrapping Moonlight, undervaluing the buzz potential for the show and especially its star. But I'm with you when it comes to Friday-night TV. Much as I had come to enjoy Moonlight and as addicted as I am to Battlestar Galactica, I never ever watch them live. Like countless others, I am never home on Friday nights, and as long as the networks continue to program original fare on Fridays — let's hope it doesn't become another Saturday anytime soon — they'll have to take time-shifting and other new ways of watching the show into account.

Only 2 more Fridays for the Keep It Dark campaign

Only two more weeks to go before Moonlight returns! *cheer* Of course, the Keep It Dark campaign continues until then. CBS still has not put any of Moonlight's episodes on the official website for our viewing. Even tho there were no videos to stream, Moonlight still used to be an option when you clicked on "full episodes." Now, CBS has removed our show from that menu. *sigh* I hope all of this is just to prepare for the return. You'd think the network would realize that it would help new fans if they were able to watch reruns of the first 12 episodes before jumping into the fresh ones. For those lovely newbies..... you can find Moonlight's episodes posted on YouTube.

Tonight, we will watch Love Lasts Forever (episode #1x11) on Veoh together.

Moonlight & its great fans mentioned in two Zap2it website articles

Daniel Fienberg, from Zap2it, has written an article spurred mainly by the recent cancellation of Jericho. He addresses the fans reaction to that, as well as bringing up past beloved but lost shows ~ such as Firefly, Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, etc. While I do not personally think Moonlight is the cause of Jericho not being renewed, I (of course) like what he says about Moonlight fans. :) Daniel also has the same complaints we do about the way television ratings are tabulated. "The ratings system is a crock." I'm posting a bit of his article for you.

Fans shouldn't blame CBS for cancelling 'Jericho' again

Want somebody or something to blame, Jericho fans? Try Moonlight. The Friday night drama has consistently drooped in ratings between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs delivering an audience which, under normal circumstances -- this being the network that cancelled Close to Home, which would have been a hit anywhere else -- wouldn't be enough for renewal. But I have to believe that CBS is terrified by the dedication and level of obsession from the Moonlight fans. If the network's going to pick up one low-rated drama for next year, it'll be Moonlight, because CBS would rather weather another sea of goobers than deal with irate care packages full of blood.

Can I just say that I agree with y'all on one thing: The ratings system is a crock. If you want to make your fortune, develop a better way of measuring TV audience size than what Nielsen currently does. You couldn't do worse. But TV networks can only do business with what they have available, so your letters that start with "I watch Jericho religiously and so do my 100 best friends and none of us have Nielsen boxes" really won't have much of an impact. CBS tried to do business a different way this past year and you got seven new episodes out of it.

That's not bad.

Ask angry fans of Journeyman or Drive or Firefly if they would be satisfied with another seven episodes. Jericho fans probably shouldn't complain to Cane fans about CBS not giving them enough of a chance to find an audience. Airing in the Tuesday death slot, Cane averaged 8.9 million viewers this season, but nobody invited Cane to make new episodes after the strike ended. In that same time slot, Jericho averaged 6.8 million viewers.

My point isn't to malign the most passionate of Jericho fans or to rub salt in the wounds so soon after the last salt massage.

The point is just to say... Why the anger? Again! I understand sadness or frustration or a little bit of resignation. But why so mad? Two DVD sets with 29 episodes? That's not so bad. The Prisoner only aired 17 episodes. Fawlty Towers aired 12. My Freaks and Geeks DVD set has 18 episodes, one more than my Undeclared set.

Why should Tuesday night be about venting your spleen at CBS, at the tastes of American viewers at Nielsen?

Why not just say good-bye to Jake and Hawkins and the rest of the gang?

There'll be plenty of new shows to obsess over soon enough, at least until they're cancelled.

http://tinyurl.com/ytjtgh

Zap2it mentions Moonlight in another article. We've all been concerned about the ratings for the Price is Right specials that CBS has been airing on Friday nights.

The network's "The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular" specials have been performing so well on Friday nights that CBS wants to milk the Drew Carey franchise for all its worth, ordering for new primetime specials for May sweeps.

Don't worry, though, "Moonlight" fans. These new "Price Is Right" installments will air on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m., the slot currently occupied by "Big Brother -- 'Til Death Do Us Part."
