Does CBS realize canceling Moonlight was a mistake?

Today, Parade Magazine featured an inquiry sent in by a Moonlight fan asking if CBS knows what a blunder they made in canceling our show. We all knew the reasoning behind the network signing Alex O'Loughlin to a talent holding deal so quickly.

Personality Parade Cancelled TV Series

Question ~ Does CBS realize that canceling its vampire series Moonlight with Alex O’Loughlin was a mistake?— Sandy Bleiss, Bartlett, Tenn.

Answer ~ Yes. Our sources tell us that the outcry was so great that CBS took steps to bring O’Loughlin back into the fold. CBS Films cast him opposite Jennifer Lopez in The Back-Up Plan, and this fall he’ll star as a doctor in a new medical series, Three Rivers. Is there a cancelled TV series you’d like to see revived?

Ask Matt answers a fan's questions about Alex O'Loughlin's Three Rivers project

TV Guide's Matt Roush fields great fan questions about Alex O'Loughlin and his new tv show pilot, Three Rivers.

Ask Matt

Question : There's been a lot of buzz about the Three Rivers pilot. I don't think I've ever heard this much about a pilot being filmed before. Is this an indication that it has a higher than normal chance of being picked up for the fall schedule? Do the networks push certain pilots to the top of the heap for better chances of being chosen? Alex O'Loughlin fans (me included) are chewing their nails off waiting for news on new pick-ups. Any inside news about this? The show sounds fascinating beyond the fact that it will star our handsome and talented Aussie hunk. —Cindy R

Matt Roush : The buzz about Three Rivers is magnified by the fandom for Alex O’Loughlin. Nothing wrong with that, but keep it in perspective. Industry buzz, including in the Hollywood Reporter just this week, indicates the show is a “strong contender” for fall, no doubt enhanced by the star’s enthusiastic following, especially since the demise of Moonlight on the same network. (There’s a reason he was given a high-profile guest role on Criminal Minds in an episode airing next week.) Is all of this enough to clinch Three Rivers an on-air spot? Maybe, maybe not. For me, the show makes some sense because with ER gone, there’s an opening for a new medical drama with sexy leads. The transplant-surgeon angle also sounds promising, but just the very idea of Alex O’Loughlin around blood (even if it’s being pumped into patients instead of being drained from necks) no doubt has millions swooning. Hard not to see why.

Still no details for Alex O'Loughlin's next project

Fans are anxiously waiting for the details about Alex O'Loughlin's new television project. Lauren asked TV Guide's Matt Mitovich if he had any scoop. Nope!

Today's News: Our Take

Question : Surely there must be some word on what Alex O'Loughlin will be doing next for CBS. Right? — Lauren

Matt : I know the Alex O fans are waiting with bated breath to see what his announced-long-ago talent deal will deliver, so I tried an "end run" and picked the brain of his Aussie pal, Yvonne Strahovski. (Remember, her mom works with his dad back Down Under.) Alas, the Chuck beauty told me, "I haven't spoken to Alex in ages. I owe him a call. You know as much as I do!" O'Sigh. Officially, CBS has "nothing to report at this time."

Reader's question about Sophia Myles' career answered

A lovely Moonlightfan Blog reader sent this scan to me ~ to share with you, of course :) It is a Q&A about Sophia Myles in the USA Weekend Sunday newspaper insert. Ooooooo.... and the marvelous photo used is from Sophia's appearance at the Paley Center's Moonlight panel in April. She looks gorgeous!

Question : Is Sophia Myles, who played Beth in the now canceled CBS series Moonlight, a new actress? - Tony Amodeo, Phoenix

Answer : No. But she got her start in England, making her screen debut at 16 on British TV. She likes to vary her roles, but "vampires have been very kind to my career," says Myles, 28, who has appeared in a BBC version of Dracula, as well as Underworld and its sequel. "The power of the vamp is huge." Unfortunately, it wasn't huge enough to get Moonlight a second season on CBS. - Contributing : Gayle Jo Carter & Nancy Mills

Fan asks about Alex O'Loughlin's next move

TV Guide's Mickey O'Connor fielded a question today about our lovely Alex O'Loughlin and his future projects. Top secret offers, huh?

Mickey refers back to a post you may remember where he suggested Alex would be perfect for the tv show, Lost. Since it is mentioned in his answer today, I'll repost the old info for those who missed it.

Great question, Debbie! We need to keep Moonlight and its incredible cast in the minds of entertainment reporters, critics and such. It is very important.

Today's News : Our Take

Is Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin going to do anything that will continue to showcase acting magnificence? — Debbie

Mickey: Last I heard from Benedict XVI, the canonization process is well under way, but until St. Alex makes his official Vatican debut, he is weighing offers, as they say. Top-secret offers. That I can't talk about yet. But I can say that my idea for AO'L's next move probably isn't going to happen.

http://tinyurl.com/5cysfl

Here is Mickey's idea for Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring & Alex O'Loughlin's next projects.....

Not to beat a dead vampire, but despite all the last-ditch efforts — by the CW, TNT, DirecTV — Moonlight is actually dead, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Their source says the sets have been dismantled, and the show's soundstage will soon be occupied by Simon Baker's new drama The Mentalist.

Although I wasn't a regular viewer of Moonlight, I am sad for its passing, since it's nice when a show generates such a devoted fan base. Let's all look toward the future though. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, star of the recently canceled New Amsterdam, has already landed a new pilot at Fox. Where will you like to see Moonlight stars Alex O'Loughlin, Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring show up next?

A Dohring-Kristen Bell reunion on Heroes seems inevitable. Myles might make a dangerous addition to Mad Men's stable of lethal beauties. And call me crazy, but when I see O'Loughlin, I immediately think: "Widmore henchman" on Lost. Got any other ideas? — Mickey O'Connor

Moonlight questions in Ask Ausiello column today

Ask Ausiello, on TV Guide's website, has two mentions of Moonlight today. We had three in Matt Roush's column on Monday, and now this. Great job of keeping our show in the news! Many shows that are canceled are forgotten almost instantly. We are not letting that happen to Moonlight :) Thank you!

In one of his answers, Michael Ausiello asks for votes as PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity Poll. Hmmmmm..... how about an exchange? He continues talking about Moonlight and we vote for him?! *grin*

Jenny asks him about the Sci-Fi network picking up our show. The answer, no to new episodes, maybe to rebroadcasting the completed 16 episodes. Just remember that as he has said himself, he gives us "scoop" that is sometimes right & sometimes not. Rumors and behind the scenes chatter that he hears from various sources. For example.... When the Writer's Strike was wrapping up, Ausiello (& other tv reporters) were saying no new Moonlight episodes til this Fall. BUT... we ended up getting 4 new episodes in May.

We agree on this ~ KEEP FIGHTING!

Ask Ausiello

Question : I voted for you on the PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity poll (like I do every year). Does that earn me some scoop on Moonlight? I heard that the CW might do something with it. What are the odds it will actually happen? — Marie

Ausiello : Thanks Marie for reminding everyone that my annual campaign to win PETA's SV honors has begun anew! As you'll recall, Kevin Eubanks edged me out at the 11th hour last year due to Jay Leno's shameless Tonight Show stumping. Help me avoid a repeat of that embarrassing fiasco by circulating this link to your friends/family and their friends and family with the following instructions: Vote for Ausiello! I don't think my enormous ego faint heart can withstand another crushing defeat. Now, what was your question Marie? Moonlight on the CW? Ain't happening. Sorry. But please, don't let that affect your vote! Would an endorsement from Alex O'Loughlin help? 'Cause I can probably make that happen.

Question : Mike, you've missed some serious Moonlight grieving, especially from me. Please tell me there is some truth to the rumors that the Sci Fi channel may be interested in picking up Moonlight. — Jenny

Ausiello : It's half true. Sci Fi passed on picking up new episodes, but there's still a chance it could air existing episodes. Short story shorter: Keep
fighting!

Moonlight takes over Ask Matt again

Ask Matt tackles several Moonlight related questions today. The fans are pouring out their feelings of loss over our show being canceled. Fan campaigns & Vampire stories being extremely popular right now are discussed.

Question : Do you think that CBS will ever be bold enough to try and break their crime procedural mold? Just look at their line-up! Every single show (except for a few reality shows and maybe Ghost Whisperer) is extremely similar to each other. They cater to one audience only, and seem extremely stubborn to change it. This season they put a couple new shows out there with a bit of a different focus, but what did they do? They canceled every single one of them! Even the one with the most charismatic, best looking star I've seen in a while: Moonlight. It had excellent cult status, with the possibility for more, yet they cancel it. In a season where all of the other networks were giving new, low-performing shows renewal just because the season was so screwed up by the writer's strike, CBS still can't take a chance, break the mold or maybe stop themselves from continuing to dig a dull, boring, same-as-usual pit for themselves. My heart is broken for Moonlight, and my puzzlement with CBS lingers. — Angie L.

Matt Roush : More than most networks, CBS is caught in that damned if you do, damned if you don't paradox. A year ago, CBS tried to shake off some of its stuffiness by going decidedly off-brand with shows like Viva Laughlin, Cane, Kid Nation and Moonlight (the latter of which had the most potential, I agree). In each case, the results ranged from disappointing to outright dud. With the exception of Moonlight, I wouldn't second-guess any of those cancellations. The only freshman hit on CBS, and it's a modest one, is The Big Bang Theory, which I'm a big fan of, but which I'd never call groundbreaking. The short-term lesson in all of this is that CBS tends to be rewarded when it plays to its strengths, with well-cast, solidly produced but undeniably formulaic crime/action procedurals and classic-style, mass-appeal multi-camera sitcoms with laugh tracks. Throw in the occasional blue-chip reality show like Survivor and The Amazing Race (which I'm thrilled will produce two cycles next season), and the greatest newsmag ever in 60 Minutes (just ignore the demos), and that's CBS in a nutshell. After the year CBS just had, you can't blame them for retrenching. Well, I guess you can, but it wouldn't do any good. So to answer your initial question: I'm betting CBS will continue to try to mix things up in seasons to come — at some point, they won't have a choice — but the process of trial and error isn't likely to be pretty.

Question : With the recent demise of Men in Trees, October Road, Jericho and Moonlight, did it seem like there was more fan fervor this year with "Save Our Show" campaigns? I have never seen such enthusiasm and creativity, and yet not a single campaign seemed to make any difference. Is there anything that the fans could have done differently that would have worked to save their shows? And please don't say, "Tell people to watch the show to improve the ratings," — from what I understand, it only matters if you're a Neilsen family, and even if it doesn't, it's not like I know millions of people. And I certainly didn't have any control over the way ABC decided to promote — or more accurately, not promote — Men in Trees, or the way ABC bounced the show around the schedule so it could never gain a decent following. Have we reached the point where the networks have so little regard for the voice of the viewers that we will never see a successful fan campaign again? — Lori

Matt Roush : ABC doomed Men in Trees (which returns this Wednesday for its final three episodes, by the way) with its inept and inexcusable scheduling, and there's probably nothing any fan campaign could have done to rescue that one. I was impressed by the pro-active and certainly pro-social awareness campaigns by fans of Trees and the various vampire dramas, but network TV isn't a charity business, to put it mildly. Ratings are just one consideration in choosing whether or not to renew a show. Strength of schedule, time-slot needs, economics, audience flow, other research factors all play a part, and maybe even the buzz that comes from these kinds of fan actions is factored in. It certainly helped Jericho get its second chance, which is why it's way too soon to cast a pall over any future fan campaigns. But once the tide has turned against a show, it can be hard to reverse it. And once a show is actually canceled, the odds get worse, despite the inevitable rumors that some network or other white knight is going to swoop in and rescue a show from extinction (which rarely happens).

Question : I must say how disappointed I was when I heard Moonlight was being canceled. I had only started watching it a few episodes ago, but that was enough to get me hooked. There's a series of books which I am sure you have heard of called Twilight. They of course deal with vampires and werewolves, and a human falling on love with a vampire. If it wasn't for those amazing books, I probably wouldn't have started to watch Moonlight. These books are selling out nationwide, and women especially are the ones buying them. I think CBS needs to rethink canceling Moonlight for the sake of women everywhere. We read in these books about love and sacrifice, but actually seeing something like it makes it more real for us. If they won't give us another season, they need to come up with some sort of show that would be similar to it, because more and more people are getting into these kind of vampire books. And sooner or later, some network is going to come up with something, and it's going to be a smash hit because they knew exactly what audience they were going to get. — Brittany A.

Matt Roush : The popularity of vampire book series like the Twilight series probably helps account for why the networks keep making shows like this, in hopes they'll catch on. Twilight itself, if I'm not mistaken, is being made into a feature film. Probably less risky than going the TV route. I suppose the next watershed moment for the genre will come when HBO finally launches its True Blood series, based on Charlaine Harris' "Southern Vampire" series. If HBO can't make something like this fly, who can?

Video ~ Part 2 of Alex O'Loughlin answering fan questions

Up Close with Alex O'Loughlin part 2.

TV Guide's Matt Webb Mitovich has given us the promised second part of Alex O'Loughlin answering questions sent in by Moonlight fans. He tackles many topics.....

How would Moonlight be different if it was on cable? Alex says "there'd be a lot more blood, there'd be a lot more sex, there'd be a lot more everything." Sooooo, how do we get our show moved to HBO?!?? *wink*

We've all discussed what a gentleman Mick is ~ opening the door for Beth, tipping his hat when he went into the ladies room in Fever (episode #1x04), etc. Alex addresses whether those "chivalric gestures" are his or the writer's ideas.

Does the cast have any input into the set design of their apartments or the fantastic music heard on the show. Short answer, "no."

What does he like or dislike about being a celebrity now. Being the fab person that he is, Alex is happy about the attention it can bring to charity work.... such as the amazing Moonlight Blood Drive, which he mentions again!

Exactly what color are Alex O'Loughlin's eyes has been a BIG discussion. I even did a post specifically about his expressive eyes right after Moonlight first hit the air. According to Alex, they are "hazel-y blue but they change color, depending on how much sleep I've had, if the sun's out..."

Alex's favorite cartoon character is the same as mine! I knew I liked him for a reason. hehehe

The Breakfast Club's audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin

Wanna wake up with Alex? Or, Mick St John? *wink* The Breakfast Club morning radio show at 94.1 KODJ in Utah did a fun little audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin. He didn't have much time & sounded sleepy. Sexy, husky voice!

Funny when the publicist catches herself about to call Alex "Mick."

A fan did get to ask him a couple of questions. One will make those of you attending the Moonlight Convention sad tho. Alex says he will not be able to come to the con. :( Sounds like he will be off promoting Moonlight overseas.

Poor Alex! He is always asked about losing out on the role of James Bond. I've heard him tell people several times that it is not fun talking about a job that you didn't get.

Video interview ~ Alex O'Loughlin answers questions from Moonlight fans!

TV Guide's Matt Mitovich asked Alex O'Loughlin questions sent in by Moonlight fans! Very interesting that Alex says he and our show writers have different ideas about the future of MickBeth. He has such a vision for Mick, and has brought him to life for us. I don't want him to be unhappy with what happens and he has to portray. With all his hard work, I can't imagine that our writers would completely discount his input.

Video of Moonlight's People's Choice Awards win and Alex's speech

This is a video showing Queen Latifah announcing Moonlight as the winner, Alex O'Loughlin's acceptance speech and his answers to the fan's questions. I know that he won over even more fans with his thoughtful words and easy going manner. He looks soooooo good in this clip. He really needed, and deserved, the time off. I adore that lovely Australian accent.

Of course, one of the fan questions was "What do you think will happen between Mick and Beth?" Part of his reply "...the relationship can only go so far for the show to continue to be a show..." is what he has said in many interviews.

Who else thought the answer to "What makes Vampires so sexy?" should be "DUH ~ just look at him!?!" *grin*

Alex was the only winner not holding the People's Choice Award trophy in their video, right? Hmmmm.... maybe the organizers did not have time to ship it all the way to Australia.
