Jason Dohring and Shannyn Sossamon move on to HBO

Speaking of new projects for our Moonlight cast..... Josef and Coraline have been hired to work on HBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

HBO populates its comedy pilots
Dohring, Burton, Sossamon and, Mescudi join casts
By Kimberly Nordyke

HBO is firming up the casts of its comedy pilots "Washingtonienne" and "How to Make It in America," adding Jason Dohring and Kate Burton to the former and Shannyn Sossamon and Scott Mescudi to the latter.

"Washingtonienne," based on Jessica Cutler's book, revolves around the professional and personal lives of three smart, sophisticated 28-year-old girls working on Capitol Hill.

Dohring will play Spencer, a senior legislative assistant for the same senator for whom Jackie (Rachel Taylor) works. Burton will play Joy, the senator's put-upon personal assistant.

Dohring ("Veronica Mars") is repped by Innovative Artists and manager Joel Stevens. Burton ("What Just Happened?") is repped by Gersh Agency and Principal Entertainment.

"America" centers on two enterprising downtown twentysomethings (Bryan Greenburg, Victor Rasuk) who hustle their way through New York determined to achieve the American Dream.

Sossamon will play Gingy, a gallery owner who is a close friend of the duo. Mescudi will play Domingo. Sossamon is repped by Paradigm.

Still no details for Alex O'Loughlin's next project

Fans are anxiously waiting for the details about Alex O'Loughlin's new television project. Lauren asked TV Guide's Matt Mitovich if he had any scoop. Nope!

Today's News: Our Take

Question : Surely there must be some word on what Alex O'Loughlin will be doing next for CBS. Right? — Lauren

Matt : I know the Alex O fans are waiting with bated breath to see what his announced-long-ago talent deal will deliver, so I tried an "end run" and picked the brain of his Aussie pal, Yvonne Strahovski. (Remember, her mom works with his dad back Down Under.) Alas, the Chuck beauty told me, "I haven't spoken to Alex in ages. I owe him a call. You know as much as I do!" O'Sigh. Officially, CBS has "nothing to report at this time."

The Ex List is no longer on the CBS schedule

Already........... CBS has pulled The Ex-List from its television schedule. Only four episodes have been shown thus far. All entertainment outlets are reporting that the action was caused by "lackluster" ratings. I do hate that this means more people ~ crew, cast & so on ~ are out of work.

Last Friday's episode finished in second place behind NBC's Crusoe (5.92 million) again. It also was 2nd in the demo. ABC's Supernanny was #1 in the demo with a 1.7/5 rating.

Fast national ratings numbers for The Ex-List ~ Friday, October 24th, 2008

5.65 million viewers ~ 18 to 49 demo 1.6/5 share

A rerun of the show NCIS will air this Friday in place of The Ex List.

What does CBS stand for?

Several great Moonlightfan Blog readers have sent mail praising this article about CBS on the TVoholic website.

CBS: definitely doesn’t stand for Come Back Soon !
by Fred

CBS. Three letters that could mean so many things, and I’m sure many of you could think of a few significations for what you think those letters represent, I can already see the first letter linked to CSI or “Crap” for instance…

One thing these letters definitely do not stand for, though, is Come Back Soon. Nope, apparently The Eye doesn’t want you back, not really. It may pretend to, the press release might claim that’s the case, but we know better, don’t we?

I’m sure if you go on and ask fans of series like Jericho or Moonlight, you’ll find people who still haven’t given up on television, and are still willing to watch some, maybe lots even, and that might still include network television as well. Yet, mention CBS, and that one network could very well be on their blacklist. No big surprises here, when you have a look at the way the network treated them, and their beloved show.

But don’t feel alone, simple viewer that you are, because it’s the same thing on the other side of the screen, CBS treats everyone the same, obviously (and sadly), and now it’s not just viewers who are putting The Eye on their blacklist! So there might be hope…

Because it’s one thing that we, viewers, don’t tune back in on CBS, but it would be even better than people stop going to them when they got new, exciting projects. Not because it’s fun to hold a grudge, not because I don’t like CBS, but because they have proven, repeatedly, that they didn’t know how to love, handle, promote and support their shows, that they would try to control things, to change the shows, destroying them, alienating their audiences and eventually canceling them without ever giving them a fair chance.

Let’s be honest : with a network that supported a show like Moonlight, let it be and grow as the creative minds wanted it to, supporting them and promoting the show, it could have been a success. Maybe not the latest hit in TV land, but a very good & successful show nonetheless. But CBS wasn’t the place for such a thing, and now the show is dead.

We, viewers, don’t want to live through such an awful experience ever again, so we stay away from CBS. But if the creative minds on the other side decided as well never to go back to CBS, for the same reasons, because they do love & believe in their projects, maybe things could change.

A couple of days ago, Diane Ruggiero exited The Ex List over infamous famous “creative differences” between her and the network. Recently, she described said differences : “It’s like someone comes to you with a little black dress and says, ‘You can do anything you want with it, anything at all,’ and you go, ‘Oh, great,’ and then they come back and say, ‘But you need to wear this belt, and these shoes, and…’” — Sounds familiar?

Sure, CBS said they wanted her for her unique voice and her own take on the material, but that’s only words. If facts, they kept pushing her to stick as closely as possible to the Israeli show The Ex List is based on, even though this original version only ran for 11 half-hour episodes, as well as having other things that would come in the way of turning this into a long-running, hour-long-episode series (such as the fact that the heroine had no job, or no life outside of her romantic quest).

“They would keep coming to me talking about how they wanted the Israeli version, they wanted the Israeli version, and I’m going, ‘Test audiences loved the psychic, who was only in one scene (in the original). They loved her sister; she didn’t have a sister in the original. They loved the flower shop; she didn’t have a job in the original.’”

Ruggiero was allegedly brought on the project for her own voice, and she intended to do what she was hired to do. “I felt very strongly that she has to have a regular life, and this weird quest has to almost feel like a burden at times. She has to feel put upon, otherwise she bugs me. Every kind of spin they tried to put on it like that, they just wanted it to be happy and optimistic.”

Oh yes, CBS wanted to control everything, because, once again, they assumed they knew better. And this is why it got to ludicrous things such as this one : “They told me to stop using the word ‘dude’ so much because they didn’t think their audience would embrace the word ‘dude.’ I asked how many times I could use it, and they said, ‘Twice per episode.’”

Network exec just knew people wouldn’t embrace the word “dude” and that would drag them away from the show. Just like they didn’t want to witness an on-going romance developing in Moonlight, but more procedural P.I. elements, of course.

In the end, it was too much and since Ruggiero and CBS could agree on anything, and it was clear the network would not let her do the show she wanted to, despite claiming to be interested in her own voice they wanted nothing but what they had in mind, so she did the only thing left to do. “I’m not a fucking transcriber! Why would you hire me if you wanted a transcriber? I’m a pain in the ass. I have a specific thing that I do. If you don’t want that, go hire someone else.”

The worst part of this experience for Ruggiero, was how closely it mirrored what happened with That’s Life. Back then, CBS also told her they wanted a show with her distinct voice, but once she was on they kept hiring producers to work above her and give the show their voices, not hers. It’s just what those morons do, always, and now she knows better.

“I looked at the last CBS experience and that sucked, and I thought it was because I didn’t have any experience (in the industry), and now they would be cool. And instead I find myself smack in the same experience. ‘We want to do something different, we want your voice,’ and then they don’t want something different. I think they thought I’d be the same as last time, just nervous and acquiescent. But I didn’t need this.

Once we got started, I kind of knew what I wanted the show to be. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but for Friday nights at 9, I thought it would be fun and be funny, and it just became not. And it was such a bad experience, it wasn’t worth chunks of my life. It’s really sad. It’s all I’ve done since February, making the pilot. To keep doing that and having people be like, ‘Screw you’ is just too depressing.”

Conclusion ? “I’ll never work at CBS again!”

Well, I can only applaud this decision, because that’s what needs to happen now. CBS is an old network that is fading away, they have plenty of CSI and clones, and because it does well according to Nielsen, they just assume they know better than anyone else, never mind that every time they try to do something like that, it’s a failure, because then it’s not their fault, but those stupid creators/showrunners/writers who didn’t want to listen to them, of course.

So let’s all let CBS do their CSI’s over & over again, while we stick with other networks. If we don’t watch the network, if people don’t go there with their new projects, sooner or later they’ll have to think back their ways of dealing with everything, or just die. Last season, with the writers’ strike and months of American Idol versus reruns, CBS lost the title of most-watched network to Fox.

We’ll see this season if Fox changed and is indeed worthy now, but in the mean time, if you want things to change, if you don’t want another gem to be treated like crap, make sure CBS doesn’t get its title back !

PS: For the record, it’s Columbia Broadcasting System, what those three letters officially stand for.

Alex O'Loughlin talks about Moonlight & other projects ~ past & future

The lovely Melody (from Hollywood The Write Way) has published a new, fantastic interview with Mr Alex O'Loughlin! When you have time, leave a comment to let her know what you think of their chat.

Alex O'Loughlin Interview

As a huge Moonlight fan, it was a top mission of mine (ever since Hollywood The Write Way was created) to interview Australian born actor, Alex O'Loughlin. After CBS cancelled Moonlight earlier this year, thousands of fans were left wondering what that meant for Alex O'Loughlin. How soon would it be until we saw him as a lead on the small screen? This past August, fans got their answer - well sort of. Keep reading to see what our favorite vampire has to say about his upcoming projects, Moonlight, and more.

Tell us about the one year deal you recently signed with CBS.

Alex O'Loughlin : Moonlight came to an end, which was very sad and then I just went away for a couple of weeks to Mexico. When I came home, there were a few offers from different studios and networks. The deal that sat the best for me was what CBS was offering. They were open to negotiation points that I wanted to bring in, which was great and I discussed where I would like to go with my career. Since then, I have been developing an original series with executive producer and head writer on Criminal Minds, Simon Mirren that we have been putting together under Mark Gordon. It is an original concept that we are in the middle of pitching at the moment. It will be a one hour drama that I will be producing and starring in. It is a story of redemption but from a very different point of view.

What is the plot for your next film, Whiteout and explain your character?

Alex O'Loughlin : It is based on a graphic novel. I play an Australian pilot living on a base with a group of people. I am an ambiguous character, I am not quite a cheeky guy, who is up to a little more than we know. It is directed by Dominic Sena, produced by Joel Silver, and I worked with such a great group of people. It is a thriller set in Antartica. I am very excited to see it, I actually have seen very little of it so far.

Do you remember the day that you found out you got the role for Moonlight?

Alex O'Loughlin : Yes, I do! I was in Montreal and I got a call from Joel Silver. He said that he needed me to get on a plane and come to NY immediately. I think it was 5pm and the stores were closing at 5:30pm so I had to race into town and get a suit. I had to book a flight in about 45 minutes, get on a plane to NY and then as I got to NY I was told that the cast from the Pilot had been let go. You know what, I am talking about when I found out the show got picked up, not when I found out that I got the role.

That is okay, you can talk about whatever you want.

Alex O'Loughlin : (laughs) So I didn’t have a cast! I also found out that they were no longer calling it Twilight, they would be calling it Moonlight and there were a few changes in the script. Then I found myself standing on stage at Carnegie Hall and the police did not know who we were or what we were doing…and that was the beginning of Moonlight.

Walk us through the last day of filming Moonlight.

Alex O'Loughlin : I kind of blocked it from my memory a bit. The last few days kind of string together for me. They were very busy and we were shooting like mad, finishing at all hours of the morning. The sun would come up and we had been there for 18, 19, 20 hours. The end of the last day everyone was kind of dragging themselves to their cars and leaving to go home and get some sleep. I wish I could tell you it was a little more poetic but we believed that we were coming back. It was sad.

What characteristics did you bring towards your character that were not displayed in the script?

Alex O'Loughlin : I tried to bring a sense of humor and a sense of irony. People around him did not understand the irony in situation. I tried to bring more of a passion to him. All of that being said, this was very well written. The writers and original creators were amazing. There were so many different avenues that I could have gone with my character but their writing, it made my job easy so I have to thank them a lot.

Tell me what you would have liked to see happen, not what you think would have happened if there was a Season 2 of Moonlight as far as the Mick, Beth, Coraline love triangle.

Alex O'Loughlin : I would have liked to have seen Mick & Beth start exploring a relationship together and see where that goes. Also throw Coraline in to spice things up and put an obstacle in Mick & Beth’s way for dramatic purposes. Coraline wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon and there was a lot to explore there. I also would have to explore whether Mick’s true nature as a vampire, as an immortal creature that lives on human blood would ever come to the surface and if Beth would mind being in more danger than if she was not with Mick.

Do you have a favorite quote from Moonlight?

Alex O'Loughlin : I do, Lola says “Remember darling, half the world is night.” (Episode: B.C.) I love it! I write it on some photos when people ask for autographs. (laughs) I love it!

Can you tell us your favorite episode of filming, The Shield on FX?

Alex O'Loughlin : The last one because I didn’t want to leave that whole experience. The Shield is so well written and all of the writers are so smart! To be able to kick doors open, work with guns, arrest people, have car chases… it is all so much fun. The dialogue was just as much fun because the writers are incredible. I really can’t pinpoint my favorite episode we shot because the entire experience was amazing. Every episode I did just got better and better.

Tell me about filming the movies, The Invisible and August Rush.

Alex O'Loughlin : The Invisible was shot in Vancouver and I was a lead but I was not the main lead. So I had a bunch of time off in Vancouver at such a beautiful time of the year when winter was approaching. My character worked out a lot since he had a lot of time on his hands so I ran 10-12 miles a day for 5 days a week, and shaved my head for the role. It was very physical but that was fun. There is one part in the film where Margarita Levieva’s character, Annie has me at gunpoint on the edge. When she kicks me off the small edge, she actually did that! I had a wire on me. The take that they used was actually when I almost lost my balance, so that was fun.

August Rush was a wonderful experience for me. I read the script all the way through while I was shooting The Invisible and I loved it and I read it again. I knew I had to be part of that film. I put down 2 tests at a studio in Vancouver. I played guitar and sang a couple of songs and did a few dialogue scenes. That was all actually for the lead role that Jonathan Rhys Meyers ended up playing. I spoke to the director, Kirsten Sheridan and she said that they needed a known name for the role but she would love to give me the role of Marshall. She re-wrote the character, she pumped that role up because it was a much smaller role in the beginning. We all lived together in NY and I had never lived in NY before so it was one of the greatest times of my life.

What is the most important thing that you have learned about yourself coming from Australia and making your way into Hollywood?

Alex O'Loughlin : I have learned to be able to back yourself up and give yourself what you need. It is such a cut throat industry where you get knocked down so much and get rejected so much. If you do not back yourself up, no one else is going to so you really need to learn to get up, shake the sand off your chest and keep going. Do not take yourself so seriously. All of this stuff is really wonderful if it all crumbles tomorrow, it is okay. I can go home and do something else. Not that I want to do that but it is about keeping the right perspective.

Message of thanks and information from Alex O'Loughlin

Another thoughtful message from Alex O'Loughlin :)

October already!

Hello everyone.

I would like to start by talking a bit about The American Red Cross. As you all know I was approached whilst on the show Moonlight to be a spokesperson and representative for this organization. Of course I accepted immediately. I felt honored to be a part of it and hoped I could somehow make a difference in the lives of others. Now with my Red Cross involvement drawing to a close I can only hope I did enough, but that being said I would like to bring up something I have mentioned before.

ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED!!

It was only possible for me to participate because so many wonderful, committed and passionate people came before me and put everything in it's right place for me to be able to slip into the role I eventually did. There are so many of you (and you know who you are!) who were instrumental in this venture and some of you I had the opportunity to thank personally, but to the others I never met or spoke with, thank you so very much. From the bottom of my heart I appreciate the goodwill and charity with which you all worked, and if everyone in the world practiced the same selflessness as you, well..... ;) I think we would all be doing just fine by now! Thank you.

I have only just caught up on all of my birthday mail and there were many of you who sent the most wonderful gifts and cards/letters/messages. It made my birthday something extra ordinary and I felt very loved so thank you very much!!

Wow, lots of "thank you"s today.

As for me, I am great. I am very busy, and have been since we last chatted, on the new project I am developing but it is all still hush hush, sorry guys! Anyway, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up in case we don't make it to the screen. So fingers crossed!

I will keep you all posted as soon as I have some exciting news!!

All my love

Alex x x

The Ex-List ratings for 2nd episode decline from premiere

I've received several emails asking how The Ex List did in the ratings last night. The numbers for its second episode actually declined from the premiere.... by over a million viewers. It also was in 2nd place during the time period, which was won by NBC's Deal or No Deal (with 6.52 million viewers). However, The Ex-List did take 1st place in the 18 to 49 demographic category.

Holly Valance to guest star on new tv show, Valentine

Holly Valance played the delectably dangerous Vampiress Lola on Moonlight. As you know, she is also the real life girlfriend of series star Alex O'Loughlin. Holly is guest starring in a new tv show called Valentine. It airs on the CW Network. Her episode, Act Naturally (#1x03), will be shown on Sunday, October 19th @ 7:00 pm Central/8:00 pm Eastern.

The brief, official synopsis for Valentine ~ A family of Greek gods brings soulmates together, while keeping their true identities as deities a secret.

Info about Holly's episode & character.........

Posing as lawyers, the Valentines save a movie starlet (Holly Valance) from jail time and get her a community-service assignment at a struggling theater. The actress' soul mate is the theater's owner (Ryan Devlin), who has doubts about her work ethic. Meanwhile, Phoebe breaks into Kate's apartment to find proof that she can't be trusted.

TV Week ~ ‘Ex-List’ Can’t Top ‘Moonlight’

More media & entertainment sources are picking up on the fact that The Ex-List's ratings were much lower than Moonlight's debut numbers.

TV Week
‘Ex-List’ Can’t Top ‘Moonlight’

Baseball took some steam away from football on Sunday, while CBS’ Friday premiere of “The Ex List” failed to best “Moonlight’s” launch numbers.

On Friday, CBS debuted “The Ex List” (2.0/6) to moderate ratings. “List” declined 20% from the premiere of “Moonlight,” which previously held the time period. “Ghost Whisperer” (2.4/9) held steady from its year-to-year rating, while “Numb3rs” dipped 19%.

TV By The Numbers ~ the Ex-List disappoints

Friday Night Ratings: Ex-List disappoints
by Robert Seidman

Things keep getting worse for Friday nights. CBS won the night overall, but both the premiere of The Ex List and the return of Numb3rs must have been a little disappointing for the EYE network. The Ex List was down off the premiere of Moonlight a year ago, but Numb3rs was also down noticeably.

Despite the woes, CBS was the only network to have two shows place over 8 million viewers.

Moonlight Fans — I’m not sure this info is gloat-worthy, but I’m not sure it isn’t. There is no denying that Moonlight did have 8 million viewers in its premiere last year and that The Ex List didn’t. And although The Ex-List had slightly more 18-49 year old viewers than Moonlight’s finale, even in the finale, Moonlight drew 7.47 million. You can see last year’s numbers for Moonlight’s first-run airings here.

New audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin

Moonlight Detective has done a wonderful new audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin. He discusses the cancelation of Moonlight, trying to keep his fans updated, working on his next television project for CBS with Simon Mirren (head writer & executive producer of Criminal Minds), association with the American Red Cross coming to an end, a really funny synopsis of his new movie Whiteout, etc. One thing he mentions about Moonlight being canceled is worrying because the crew members were suddenly without their much needed paychecks.... such a sweet guy!

Lovely to hear Alex's delicious voice and Australian accent :)

Happy Birthday to Shannyn Sossamon

Today is the lovely Shannyn Sossamon's 30th birthday! In honor of that, I'm posting a great fan video created by the talented DarkRavyn. The clip is dedicated to Shannyn's Moonlight character, Coraline, and Mick St John. All the scenes are set to the song #1 Crash by Garbage, which happens to be a fave of mine too :)

Happy Birthday, Shannyn!
