Three Moonlight entries in Ask Matt's column today

Moonlight has three entries in Matt Roush's "Ask Matt" column today. I can not wait to hear what you have to say after reading them.... especially #2. *growl* Our fave scene of Josef turning Mick is Matt's highlight of the season too. He also says that he expects Moonlight to be picked up for a second season!

Question: Did you see Moonlight? It was stunning! Joel Silver has clearly outdone himself! It just blew me away. It was intense, romantic, action-packed, moved very quickly and yet had great continuity. The cast was superb. There are not enough adjectives to describe this show. The relationship between Josef and Mick was amazing. I'm so glad that Jason Dohring got a major role here. He's a very good actor. Hope to see more? The Prince of Darkness becomes Prince Charming and reverses back to save "his Beth" from the rogue vampire. Could it be any better? We ladies were salivating! Matt, no occult show on TV could possibly measure up. I'm not thinking People's Choice Award, I'm thinking Emmy! If the following three episodes are anything like this one, I'm ready for a two-hour premiere in the fall. — Sharon

Matt Roush: But did you like it? Now that's what I call a mash note, and I sure hope you enjoyed the two-page photo spread of Alex O'Loughlin in the current Sexiest Stars issue. Pages 56-57. (Who am I kidding? It's probably hanging on thousands of walls already.) I would agree absolutely on one point: The scene where Josef turned Mick back into a vampire was a highlight of the entire season, and definitely Jason Dohring's best work in the series to date. (Reminded me of the erotic charge I got out of the early Anne Rice vampire novels.) Emmy-worthy? I won't go that far. But worthy of cult status and a second season? More and more.

Question: I was a reluctant fan of Moonlight in the beginning. It was way too much like Angel, and the episode where Mick had to feed on his girlfriend to survive was very clichéd and an obvious copycat of Angel and Buffy. However, I gave the show a chance, and I have to admit, it grew on me until I found myself looking forward to its return. Then, I watched the first episode back last Friday night. Not only was the story incredibly obvious and way too easy to see where the plot was going, but the product placements were so obtrusive that they completely overwhelmed the story. There was iPhone, iPhone and then more iPhone, followed by Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft and finally Krispy Kreme donuts. There was hardly room for the badly written story. I was disappointed. — John

Matt Roush: I get this point of view as well. I'm enjoying Moonlight more as it goes, but still find much of the writing (generally, anything that doesn't involve the whole vampire/mortality thing) beyond clunky. So much of Moonlight feels like a generic CBS show: the obvious crime plots, the bland supporting cast (excepting Dohring, who has improved lately), the harsh lighting. (Has there ever been a sunnier vampire drama than the ironically titled Moonlight?) Alex O'Loughlin is pretty much carrying this show on his capable shoulders, but I hope that if things settle down behind-the-scenes in the second season (assuming there will be one), that the rest of the show can rise to the level of its star's charisma. It won't be easy. But to single this show out for its product placements is a bit naïve. That's the economic reality of the world much of network TV is living in. If you're watching the show in real time, already sitting through the commercials, you may have cause to complain. But if you're watching on DVR/TiVo, skipping the commercials, that's a big reason you're going to have to get used to this trend. But it's true they could be a little less obvious about it, especially when it comes to those loving close-ups of the phones.

Another Moonlight question: The cast in a recent interview said that the last four episodes would "stand alone" due to there being no second-season pickup as yet. That is, there would be no arcs created because they didn't want to leave the audience hanging in the event that the series did not return. They also said that all four episodes were now wrapped. My question is this: If the network announces a pickup before the final episode airs, do you think they would create (or may already have ready) an alternate ending in an attempt to leave a cliffhanger to entice second-season viewing? Or do you think they will leave it as it is and move into a less stand-alone format if a second season happens? — Lyn

Matt Roush: The CBS upfront announcement will take place two days before Moonlight's scheduled May 16 season finale, so this is a moot point. I doubt seriously any show would rejigger its finale at the last minute just to give the audience a contrived cliff-hanger, which is already a pretty overdone gimmick, don't you think? The main reason I bring up this issue is to state again my own conviction that producers of marginal series do themselves and certainly their fans a disservice by ending an "on the bubble" season with a huge cliff-hanger. It's one thing to leave a show open-ended (like, say, the finale of Eli Stone, where Eli woke from the coma with the tumor gone and a world of possibilities ahead of him) and another entirely to leave the fan hanging with a life-or-death situation (like, say, if Eli had chosen to end without letting us know if he was going to wake up.) If Moonlight gets renewed, which I expect to be the case, then let the arcs fly. Although knowing CBS's proclivities, I bet their desire is for the show to keep the stories as self-contained as possible.

Spoilers ~ BuddyTV covers the return of new Moonlight episodes

SPOILER ALERT!

BuddyTV is hyping the return of Moonlight next week with its first post Writer's Strike episode ~ Fated to Pretend (#1x13).

Moonlight: Spoilers for the First Post-Strike Episode

In exactly one week from now, millions of Moonlight fans will be tuning in to CBS to watch the highly anticipated return of the vampire detective series. But for those who are suffering severe Moonlight withdrawal after nearly three months of hiatus, here's a quick fix that will hopefully ease the wait.

Warning: Contains spoilers.

When we last saw Moonlight, vampire private investigator Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin) saw Josef (Jason Dohring) survive an assassination attempt and found out about his fanged friend's secret. We also learned something about the royal blood line of Mick's ex-wife Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), who eventually gave Mick a cure that made him temporarily human. Beth (Sophia Myles), on the other hand, was still distressed over the fact that Mick refused to turn her dying boyfriend into an immortal bloodsucker.

In “Fated to Pretend,” the episode airing on April 25, Mick enjoys what time he has left as a human by repairing his relationship with Beth. He invites her over for dinner and after confirming that the invitation is for "a date," Beth considers the ramifications of going on a date with Mick, and finally agrees.

Besides enjoying his time with Beth, Mick is also talking pleasure in the other simple things like sleeping on a couch, awaking to sunlight, and drinking some orange juice. Unfortunately, his brief encounter with mortality becomes in jeopardy when Beth is kidnapped by a suspect in the murder case being investigated by Mick and Maureen, Beth's boss at Buzzwire. The case revolves around a 40-year-old politician currently running for mayor whose wife died tragically a few years earlier and is now raising their teen daughter Bonnie alone. Mick gets help from his buddy Josef to kill some really bad vampires. On the other hand, he is forced to decide whether saving Beth is worth sacrificing being human again.

While a new character, ADA Benjamin Talbot (Eric Winter), who doesn't see eye to eye with Mick is introduced in this episode, another recurring character is unfortunately killed off.

Catch the return of Moonlight next Friday at 9pm on CBS.

SPOILER ALERT!

Don't watch this video if you don't wanna know what's gonna happen! CBS EyeLab has just released a new video to promote Moonlight's April 25th return. Lots of Alex O'Loughlin! The preview clip combines some of the Mick St John footage we have already seen with new scenes.

Since we first saw "the kiss" in the CBS tv commercial, there has been tons of discussion about that ~ does Mick kiss Beth for a change? is it before or after the rescue? where does it happen? In this promo, we get a longer version of the MickBeth kiss. Oooooooooo my......... It looks like they are having one of their talks. Beth starts to walk away, but Mick grabs her & kisses her! *swoon*

Josef ~ You sealed the deal yet?
Mick ~ It isn't about sex.
Josef ~ Of course, it's about sex. Everything's about sex.
I love Josef ;>

Also, we know which episode we will be meeting Mick's old pal in and where those flashback Alex in uniform photos came from. Whew! That's a lotta info!

SPOILERS for Moonlight's season finale ~ Sonata (episode #1x16)

Spoiler Alert!

Spoilers for Moonlight's season one finale ~ Sonata (episode #1x16) ~ Script subject to change

Several of our producers have said that since Moonlight is about "Vampires that live among us" we will see more vamps in every day life on the show. That happens in this episode.... college students, attorneys, financial planners, stock brokers, etc.

Mick and Beth are working together again. This time, they are investigating the death of a human stock broker named Vince. He has ties to the Vampire nation, including Josef... although he may have been unaware they are vamps. AND.... Vince apparently had sex with a vamp right before being killed.

In fact, we hear about quite a lot of mortal/vamp sex in this episode. Mick questions a college student. I remember those days ~ up all night/sleep all day. :> That is a good cover for a Vampyre. The vamp student even says that to Mick....40 years & 10 degrees. She also mentions that the drunk frat boys have no idea when a hickey is not a hickey. ( The ones I know wouldn't care anyway! ) Then, she & Mick have the following exchange.... Mick ~ "No one notices the puncture wounds on their necks?" Student ~ "That's not the artery I go for." Mick ~ "Oh" WOW! *grin*

Ada Talbot goes to an event at his university in a tuxedo. Does Beth accompany him?

Beth has a conversation with a Vampiress, Emma, who took a mortal as her lover. She turned him so that they could be together forever. Beth is curious if it worked. Emma tells her that she and Jackson have been together for 150 years. She says he "felt like home." Beth thinks that "she has her own someone like this." Then she says "he made you feel safe."

It is obvious that Beth is thinking of Mick. The Emma & Jackson relationship gives her a glimpse of the opposite outcome of Josef & Sara turning (Sleeping Beauty episode #1x10), which left her shaken.

Watch With Kristin's new interview with Alex O'Loughlin

E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos has done a new interview with Alex O'Loughlin. He chats with her while trying to grab a bite of food. Being a gentleman of course, he apologizes to her for doing so. They discuss the wonderful Moonlight Fans Blood Drive! It is cool to hear about the possible Red Cross spokesperson position directly from Alex.

I wish CBS would just tell Alex that they are not going to let him or Moonlight go already!

We are so fortunate to have such a great guy leading our show. Thank you, Alex :) In case you need it, here again is a link to make your pledge for the Moonlight Blood Drive ~

http://www.youchoose.net/campaign/moonlight_season_2

Watch With Kristin
Have Dinner with Moonlight Star Alex O'Loughin

OK, so that title up there may be a little cruel and misleading to any fans who thought it a real invitation to have a romantic picnic in the sand with Alex O'Loughlin. (I'll pause while you visualize...and wipe your drool.) But in the Q&A that follows, you can have the next best thing (maybe?): A cyberdinnertime-chat experience with Alex, who called just moments ago, while chomping down a salad during a five-minute break on set. (Did you hear the one about TV leads being busy?)

More importantly, as you may have heard, the fans of CBS' Moonlight are a wee bit...impassioned. And by "wee bit" I mean they are willing to give their own blood and have coordinated a truly heartwarming (see what I did there?) philanthropic campaign to help support the series, via a blood drive with the American Red Cross.

Read on for Alex's thoughts on the fandemonium, the prospects of season two and what's in store when Moonlight returns to CBS on April 25...

Kristin : I heard you were so moved by the fan blood drive, you want to take part?

Alex O'Loughlin : Oh yeah, I’m a part of it. I’m hopefully gonna be spokesperson for Red Cross at some level. But I’m absolutely being a part of it.

Kristin : How does it feel to know your fans care that much?

Alex O'Loughlin : It’s just so great. Even more so than them caring about the show is that such initiative is being used to participate in a community service at such a selfless level. I think it’s such a great idea, and it’s such a wonderful project and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. And then on a show level, it’s thrilling to know that people care about the show as much as I do.

Kristin : How are you feeling now about the chances of another season?

Alex O'Loughlin : Before I tell you that, I’m going to apologize because I’m eating a salad while I’m talking to you.

Kristin : No problem. I know your schedule is very busy, what with you being in every scene. And it's nice to know you really eat—unlike your alter ego.

Alex O'Loughlin : I eat real food so Mick doesn't have to. As for another season, I think it’s difficult to answer, because CBS is so unpredictable in how and why they make the decisions they make. Which is why no one, not even the other networks can second-guess them at this time of the year before the upfronts. Personally, I think it’d be a smart business choice to pick the show up, because we have such a rabid fan base and people will tune in to watch.

Kristin : Is it hard not knowing?

Alex O'Loughlin : As an actor, I can’t ever afford to second-guess anything, because more than often, I’m wrong, and it hurts too bad. I’m so invested in this show. I’ve put a lot of love and a lot of heart and a lot of thought and a lot of creative and emotional energy into this piece, and I don’t want to go anywhere.

Kristin : The fans would agree. What can you tell me about what we can expect when the show comes back?

Alex O'Loughlin : Sex and drama. Lots of sex and drama. Sexy sex and sexy drama. We’re just finishing up episode 14, which leads to 15 and 16.

Kristin : Does it feel like you're ramping up toward the season finale?

Alex O'Loughlin : Yeah, things are getting bigger. It doesn’t feel like a finale. It feels like a beginning. I don’t feel like we’re riding for the end. We are at beginning of something huge. I haven’t read episode 16, which is our final installment, but I’ve just finished 15, and it’s fantastic. It’s so full of life, it’s awesome stuff. It’s got some incredible flashbacks, and it’s got some Mick emotion that will knock everyone out of their socks. It’s got a whole bunch of stuff that will really rock the fans.

Kristin : You and Sophia (Beth) have such great chemistry.

Alex O'Loughlin : We’ve become great friends. She’s a terrifically committed actor, and she’s a ball of fun on set. She’s outrageously funny herself and loves to be a part of the gag. She’s just a real team player. You'll always find her hanging out with the electrics or hanging out on the curbside laughing with the wardrobe and having a great time, as opposed to, like, stuck up in her trailer. She’s not that person. So it's great working with her. We're having a blast.

SPOILERS ~ More information about Moonlight's next episodes

A bit more spoiler info is drifting out for Moonlight's four new episodes. Sooooo exciting!

SPOILER ALERT!

Rumor has it that sometime during Moonlight's four new episodes we will be introduced to an old friend of Mick's. Apparently, it will be someone he was close friends with in the Army during WWII. You would be worried that someone from Mick's past could cause problems when they see that he has not aged a day. Not this pal tho..... he supposedly will also still appear to be in his 20's/30's! Wow! I am dying to know what happens. Is Mick's friend a Vampire too? If so.... when/how did that happen? and who is his sire?!?

Spoilers for Moonlight's new episode ~ What's Left Behind (#1x15)

SPOILERS ~ Information about Moonlight's four new episodes is really flowing now! We are already getting hints about the storyline for episode #1x15. The third of our four remaining shows for this season.

As usual, do not read if you want to be surprised. Script subject to change.......

SPOILER ALERT!!! ~ Moonlight's Episode #1x15 ~ What's Left Behind ~ Airdate May 9th, 2008

Just as Beth was herself kidnapped as a child, a little girl is taken in this episode.... six year old Jess Fordham. She has been hearing noises and having nightmares. Of course, her family just thinks this is the usual afraid of the dark/monsters thing that happens with many children.

The vampire nation is concerned by her disappearance. Josef seems to know members of the little girl's family. He investigates her kidnapping with a woman named Sally. They search for papers at the crime scene. It looks like the papers are also missing.

ADA Talbot is investigating a classic car chop shop.

Coraline returns! She is researching documents, photos & blueprints at a library.

Is this kidnapping connected to Coraline's similar act with Beth? Or, is she still doing research for the "cure?"

No Mick and Beth spoilers for this episode.... or.... are the writers just messing with our brains?! :> Is "Sally" a code name for Beth? For that matter, is Josef actually going to do some investigating? Or, is it Mick? As we know, writers have been known to use code names to keep people guessing. I think it would be fun to see Josef and Beth working together tho.

Moonlight in Returning Favorites section of new TV Guide Magazine

TV Guide's March 31st to April 13th, 2008 issue features Moonlight in its section on returning shows. Along with the mildly spoilery information is a great photo of Alex O'Loughlin as Mick St John. What a lovely thing to find in your mailbox!

Note ~ they state that Mick was turned in 1947, which is incorrect. He became a Vampire in 1952, on his wedding night.

SPOILER ALERT.... especially for international fans who haven't seen the first 12 episodes :)

Returning Favorites

[Friday] Moonlight

Returns : 4/25, 9/8c, CBS

Where we left off :
Private eye vampire Mick St John (Alex O'Loughlin) saw his fanged friend Josef (Jason Dohring) survive an assassination attempt. Mick's ex Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), who turned him into a bloodsucker in 1947, gave him a cure that made him temporarily mortal - and ready to cozy up to reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles). But Beth might not succumb : After all, when her boyfriend was gunned down, Mick refused to save him by turning him into one of the living dead.

What's next :
"We've always suspected that there are doctors, lawyers, housewives and garbagemen who live among us as vampires," executive producer Harry Werksman says. "We are going to explore the pleasures of being human." Viewers will also learn more about Mick's past and watch him struggle to win back Beth. "As that happens we're going to introduce a romantic foil who makes her wonder if being with a human isn't the way to go," adds executive producer Gabrielle Stanton.

Dead again :
Mick won't have a heartbeat much longer. "As his vampirism returns, he'll have a much better understanding of his powers," Werksman says. "Where he once looked at it as a curse, by the end of the season, Mick will realize that being undead is something he can live with."

Episodes left : 4

Photo caption : Mick is alive and kicking - for a while

I have been saying that the temporary "cure" for his Vampirism should give Mick a new understanding and appreciation for his Vampire skills/powers. Glad to read that seems to be the way our writers feel too. :)

Great news! CBS issued a press release today stating they will rebroadcast Moonlight's The Mortal Cure (episode #1x12). Now, we only have to wait until 4/18 for our Mick fix. We've been hoping that the network would air a few reruns of the series before jumping into the new stuff. Newbies will benefit from seeing how Mick became temporarily human... and... I guess... the rest of us fans wouldn't mind watching it again too much. *wink*

Spoilers for Moonlight's episode #1x14 ~ Click

Spoilers for Moonlight's episode #1x14 ~ Click. These are a few tidbits from the script.... subject to change.

SPOILER ALERT!

Buzzwire gets a new editor ~ Grant Lewis ~ and a new name ~ iTalk. Grant is not worried about ethics & whether or not a story is true. He wants to scoop TMZ, Ain't It Cool News, etc.

One of the paparazzi starts to notice how "unusual" Mick is.... the only person not eating or drinking in photos from the Ivy, etc.

This episode really reminds you that Moonlight is set in LA.

Beth is doing a story about the paparazzi, which ends up bringing her & Mick together.

Grant wants reporter "Ann Booker" to get the story of an actress who is said to be cursed, Tierney Tate. Mick happens to be looking after Tierney. Many assume he is her new boyfriend ~ including Beth?!?

Mick & Tierney end up at a bar where they run into her on again/off again boyfriend, Scott.... AND, Beth there with another man.

Tierney ~ "Hey, isn't that your friend?"
Mick turns to see who Tierney's talking about. He's surprised to see Beth at the bar with Jason Abbott. Alongside him, three dark suited men with grim looks on their faces.
Tierney ~ "I saw you with her at the Ivy."
Mick ~ "Yes. She's..... a friend."
Tierney ~ "Maybe more than a friend?"
Mick ~ "Are you getting jealous? We had something before, but it's over now. (beat) It's complicated."
Tierney ~ "God, I hate it when guys say that."
She shoves Mick towards Beth with a smile.
Tierney ~ "Go talk to her."
Tierney is a force that cannot be denied. Mick moves towards Beth. She sees him, and he nods towards the outside deck.

Just thinking...... We have never been introduced to any of the other Buzzwire reporters. This episode's script mentions someone named Ann Booker. Is this simply a code name for Beth? Perhaps, the writers are trying to disguise her role in the sides that were released for the new character, Grant Lewis. One of his exchanges with Ann is him saying that she has "a real instinct for the offbeat." That sounds like Beth's stories. Also, the paparazzi (Dean) who becomes suspicious of Mick contacts Ann threatening to investigate &/or expose Mick if she doesn't do what he says. She seems to be upset by his phone call. Why would she give in to his threats? To protect Mick? That implies that she already knows Mick's secret, or that she is suspicious too. Another possibility is that Ann is a new character being introduced to add tension to the MickBeth romance, like ADA Talbot. What do you think?

Moonlight casting news ~ Eric Winter will play ADA Talbot

TV Guide's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Eric Winter will join Moonlight's cast. He will play ADA Talbot. It is great to hear of more progress toward our new episodes :) Hmmmmm.... in a previous post, I mentioned Talbot bringing some tension to the show. It looks like that is definitely gonna happen if he tries to become a rival for Beth's attention!

Doesn't look like that Kevin-Jason reunion is happening anytime soon on Brothers & Sisters. CBS' Moonlight has tapped the so-pretty-it-should-be-illegal Eric Winter for a major recurring role, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Winter, who's onboard for a minimum of three episodes beginning with the show's post-strike premiere on April 25, will play ADA Benjamin Talbot, a handsome, self-assured gent who plays by his own rules. I'm hearing Ben sets his sights on Beth (Sophia Myles), which, as you can imagine, makes Mick a very angry vampire.

This is definitely good news for Moonlight. Not so much for Brothers & Sisters. You with me?

DarkRavyn's wonderful new video promoting Moonlight's April 25th return

I'm sure that you have all read the following statement that CBS released.....

“Thank you for watching Moonlight and for your incredible support of the series. We are excited that the series will be coming back in April with four new, original episodes. Like any new television series, a decision to renew for next season is largely based on how many viewers watch the program. We encourage you to tell your friends about the upcoming episodes and work with us to find more viewers for Moonlight.”

We have been promoting the series for them since day one! I'm jealous of the cool promos the UK's Living Channel have created to showcase Moonlight. Why doesn't CBS do anything like that here? I can't tell you how many people I have spoken to that have no idea our show is even on the air! They watch other shows on the network (like CSI) but have never seen a Moonlight commercial. *growl* I hope CBS will actually promote the four new episodes (beginning April 25th), especially since their decision obviously depends on those ratings.

Of course, we can not depend on CBS. We must continue to spread the word ourselves. DarkRavyn has created this wonderful fan video promo for the April 25th return of Moonlight! She uses some great scenes from the show. If I wasn't already addicted to the show, this video would make me wanna check it out :)
