Having broken onto the scene and really captured people's attention as a part of Veronica Mars, actor Jason Dohring reached new cult TV heights with his role as vampire Josef Kostan, Mick St. John's best friend, on the late (and lamented) Moonlight. Earlier this year, V&S Editor Edward Gross had the opportunity to speak to Jason at the New York Comic-Con, this interview taking place prior to the show's last four episodes airing following the Writer's Strike. One note about the audio quality of this interview: he and Alex O'Loughlin were sitting next to each other, participating in separate interviews, so the "noise" level gets high at certain moments.

Sophia Myles compliments Moonlight fans in Mister Foe interview

Our girl, Sophia Myles, is out doing press for her film, Mister Foe (known as Hallam Foe in the UK). In this interview, she is asked about Moonlight's cancelation. Sophia's comment about Moonlight fans being "the most rewarding part, because it was so wonderful having an actual relationship with your audience" is very sweet :)

For English beauty Sophia Myles, 2006 represented a sort of coming-out party, with the period-piece romance Tristan & Isolde and the vampire-and-werewolf action sequel Underworld: Evolution, plus a plum role in Terry Zwigoff's Art School Confidential five months later. Her latest film is David Mackenzie's Mister Foe, in which she stars opposite Jamie Bell as Kate Breck, a middle-management hotel employee who enters into a warped relationship with a lusty kid, Hallam, who starts spying on her because she reminds him of his dead mother. Myles spoke with Vulture about working with a pervy, adult Billy Elliot, Mackenzie's deft touch with sex, and fan reaction to the recently canceled, much-beloved CBS vampire drama Moonlight.

NYM : A lot of American audiences still most associate Jamie with Billy Elliot, and here you see him … a lot more grown-up.

Sophia Myles : And he's a bit of a pervert, right!? Well, it's the same thing with me — I associated Jamie with Billy Elliot. I think most of the British public does. Jamie, as far as I'm concerned, is a national treasure. I would say he's right up there at the top of my favorite co-stars, because in any scene between him and I, he's so good and moving that all I had to do was just react to whatever he was doing. He's made this seamless transition from child star to adult star without any of the rehab and all the nonsense.

NYM : Mister Foe shares some similarities with a lot of David's other work, Young Adam and a couple of his short films, in that there are messy romances and passion and inappropriate sexual relationships.

Sophia Myles : What I love about David Mackenzie is that he doesn't do “happily ever after.” I think his films deal with reality, not fantasy, and that's what I loved about Mister Foe. The other thing that David does well is sex. I think he portrays it in a very realistic, non-gratuitous way — the rawness and often unsexiness of it. The scenes in this film aren't sensual by any means. I don't think, other than maybe for a few weirdos out there in the world, people are going to be turned on watching them.

NYM : The 16-year-olds who scour the MPAA ratings language and say, “‘Strong sexual content’? I am so there!” are going to be in for a surprise.

Sophia Myles : [Laughs.] Yes, exactly!

NYM : Kate has a line in which she says, “Sometimes I prefer sour, sometimes I prefer sweet.” It gives the sense that she's more than somewhat aware of some of the bad decisions that she's making. Did that appeal to you?

Sophia Myles : Absolutely. Women are often so badly written in movies — they're just completely one-dimensional, in the film to serve the man. Kate’s very confident, comfortable in her own skin, professional, graceful … but in fact take the mask off and behind closed doors she's a mess. She's got demons perched on both shoulders, talking to her in both ears. So often women in movies are just fluff, and that bores me senseless.

NYM : I confess to experiencing this only vicariously, but I had a lot of friends that were quite upset when Moonlight was not renewed.

Sophia Myles : Yeah, well, your friends and 8 million other fans. I had no experience with American television, but the fan following was the most rewarding part, because it was so wonderful having an actual relationship with your audience. And I loved the fact that my office was Warner Bros. I really felt like I'd made it for a second there — to work at a studio in the center of Hollywood, where there's so much history. I thought, Well, if I never work again then at least I did this. There was something magical about it, and we were all very shocked that it got canceled.

NYM : And the last movie you did before Moonlight was Outlander, which still hasn't come out. So…

Sophia Myles : What the fuck, yeah? [Laughs.] That's a crazy situation, and kind of the polar opposite of Mister Foe, which you'll come out of thinking about yourself, and your level of consciousness might be slightly enhanced. Outlander is set in Viking times in Norway, and very early on in the script an alien ship crash-lands on Earth and brings with it, as well as Jim Caviezel, this terrifying dragon. It's taking a while to come out. As always, there's drama, I think, behind the scenes. I'm not entirely sure. No one tells me because I'm just the actress. It will come out, and it's not true that it's going straight to DVD….

NYM : Do you have anything else definitively lined up?

Sophia Myles : No, I'm completely unemployed! [Laughs.] I'm not going to lie: these fucking breaks! I’ve had some exciting meetings, but for now I'm unemployed because they're still waiting to resolve this acting strike. No one is taking a chance and putting anything in production, so I'm just chilling out, getting a tan.

TV Guide ~ No release date for Moonlight DVD in USA

I've been receiving tons of emails asking when the Moonlight DVD is scheduled to be released. While the European market (region 2) has been given a date ~ November 17th ~ we still have not heard anything official for the US (region 1). *sigh* According to several people who attended the Moonlight convention in May, one of Moonlight's producers said the disc might be out in September. That didn't happen. After contacting the WB many times about this, I received a single reply stating it would not be released in 2008. It went on to say the tentative plan is for Moonlight's DVD to come out in early 2009.... no exact date.

TV Guide's Matt Webb Mitovich responds to a Moonlight fan's inquiry about the DVD release.

Question :

I've begun to hear rumblings that the Moonlight DVD for the U.S. has been put permanently on hold, even though the European edition is set to release in November. Any truth to the rumor? – Robyn

Matt :

What did you draw me into?! I checked into this topic and was made met with quite a scary Silver Wall of Silence. At the end of the day, all I have is this from David at TVShowsonDVD.com: "Warner has not announced any plans for a U.S. release of Moonlight."

Sophia Myles is out promoting the release of her film, Mister Foe, here in the US. It was called Hallam Foe in Europe. Sophia plays the role of Kate Breck. This is the movie for which she won the 2007 BAFTA Scotland award for best actress :)

Video ~ True Blood : Invitation to the Set

True Blood premieres a week from today on HBO. I am eager to check out their Vampire world. Funny.... the lead actors on this tv show are also from other countries. Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) is from New Zealand and Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) is from England. Ooooooooo ~ and Ryan Kwanten (Sookie's brother, Jason) is Australian.

In this video, we get a peek behind the scenes on the set of True Blood. Anna Paquin, Charlaine Harris (author of the book series on which the program is based), Ryan Kwanten, Alan Ball (executive producer & creator), Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte) are all interviewed. They tell us a bit about what the series has in store.

Hurricane Katrina's third anniversary ~ Remembering our Gulf Coast neighbors

You know how much New Orleans means to me. Today is the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. I am humbled by the resilience of those who fought to get their lives back after the unreal devastation of that storm. People who lost family members, friends, homes, pets and businesses in Bay St Louis, MS ~ Waveland, MS ~ St Bernard Parish ~ NOLA ~ Lower Ninth Ward ~ Biloxi, MS (too many communities to list here). Yet, they would not give up! Rebuilding not only their own lives, but helping loved ones, neighbors & strangers to do the same. Add to that the outpouring of assistance and care from every state.... and around the world. It is awe-inspiring!

Several friends in New Orleans are asking for our positive thoughts as they nervously watch the approach of Hurricane Gustav. I know shelters and charities in Oklahoma City are gearing up to receive possible evacuees, in case of emergency. Patients from hospitals in Louisiana are already being transported to one of our medical centers.

Please, remember the people of the Gulf Coast!

Of course, the Red Cross is preparing to help. I am soooooooo proud of Moonlight fans for supporting such an important organization :)

Hey everyone..... The Shield : The Complete Sixth Season is out on DVD! *cheer* As you know, Alex O'Loughlin joined the cast during that year as "the new guy," Detective Kevin Hiatt. He first appears in the episode of the same name. Those of us who are fans of the engrossing tv show can watch Alex's wonderful performance again and again. Anyone who missed it on television can enjoy his work for the first time. Just another example that Alex is such a talented actor.

Vampires & Slayers new audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin

Another new audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin! YEA! Candid and thoughtful, as always. This time the talk is conducted by the wonderful Ed Gross of Vampires and Slayers. He broaches some important subjects. In this interview Alex talks extensively about Moonlight... its cancelation, fighting to save the show, being happy to have had the chance to play a Vampire, the difficulty of show runners coming & going, etc.

Ed also specifically brings up Nina Tassler's "actor-centric" comment. From Alex's reaction, it seemed to me that he had not heard her remark before this chat ~ and wasn't buyin' it.

I will say again that I'm excited & thankful for Alex getting a new contract allowing him to co-develop/produce & star in his next show, as well as pitch movie ideas. He deserves it!

WOW! I've received heaps of messages from folks letting me know that they have also been writing to Warner Bros & Joel Silver. Urging them to give us more Moonlight. That makes me too happy :) :) :) I'm thrilled that you have been in this campaign too.... and not at all surprised by your dedication. We've been contacting Silver Pictures & the WB for months, and will continue to do so ~ right?!?!?

Many comments came from international fans saying that they have been sending mail. Some are using postcards showcasing their country. Very smart! Movie studios & producers want to make piles of money in the US and abroad. Mounds of colorful fan mail adorned with "Greetings from....... Australia, Germany, Brazil, Israel, England, Canada, Russia, Italy, Spain, Ireland, etc etc" is a great visual to remind them of the $$$ to be made around the world with Moonlight.

I received another exciting batch of emails from those who have not been writing to Joel Silver &/or Warner Bros ~ but now plan to after hearing Alex O'Loughlin's encouraging remarks. *cheer*

You asked for ideas about what to write. It is best to be concise and on point, since you are contacting busy people. Here are a few things I have written in various messages.... I will follow Moonlight no matter where it goes.... ask for a DVD release for season one.... encourage them to produce a film..... point out the continued support from fans even though Moonlight was canceled months ago.... express my love for our show (cast, crew and writers).... unlimited storylines.... thanks for giving us Moonlight in the first place.... Vampires are extremely popular right now.... untapped revenue to be had from movies & merchandise.... and so on :)

New audio interview with Alex O'Loughlin

The fantastic Shelby, from Jericho 4 Kids, has done a splendid new interview with Alex O'Loughlin! It is sooooooooooooooo good to hear his voice again. *cheer* His interviews are always interesting.... never monotone, boring or predictable. Not surprisingly, Alex is respectful, comfortable and adorable with Shelby.

Great question about his music & if he has any plans to record. As usual, Alex downplays his musical abilities. I hope we get to sample his songs one day.

He also downplays his writing skills. No ego trip! Unlike many stars, Alex is humble & down to earth.

I'm thrilled that Alex will be a producer on his next show. That will give him more control of the project.

He wouldn't give out details about what would have happened to Mick & Beth if Moonlight had been renewed "just in case anything ever happened with that show." I can't tell you how happy I was to hear him say that :)

Another sincere and heartwarming thank you to Moonlight fans!

Love Alex saying he thinks Moonlight would make a good movie. :) That will make some who worried that he wouldn't want to go back to the role of Mick very relieved. I giggled when Alex said to Shelby, "Maybe you should write to Joel Silver and suggest that." We have been, Alex! Moonlight fans regularly tell Joel & Warner Bros that we want a Moonlight film, and ask them not to give up on our show.

Dear Family, Friends and Fans.

Hi there all!

I would like to preface by thanking everybody who has been involved with the various American Red Cross events recently, and to those of you who have helped make the actual blood drives happen, congratulations and THANK YOU!!!

The American Red Cross is such a terrific and important organization that saves many lives every year and I am very proud to be associated in any way I can.

As you know yesterday was my birthday and thanks to everybody around me I had a really great day. In fact it was amazing. Another year older, but not necessarily wiser!

To answer some of your questions and just so the record is straight I am now 32, having been born in 1976 contrary to what other sources may tell us, which makes me year of the Dragon in Chinese astrology.

Never before have i received anything like the volume of kindness that i received this year. I have been inundated with messages, cards and gifts from so many of you and I am trying to get back to you one by one but it will take me a while so I really appreciate everyone's patience.

It's funny. Instead of Mom, Dad, Bro, Sis, Nan & Gramps etc... I now have 10,000 "thank you" letters to write!! Whoa LOL ;)

As you know I have now officially signed back with the CBS family for a new show opportunity. We are currently in development of a number of new ideas and this will keep us busy through till the end of the year.

I know this isn't much information but I'm under contract again and I'm afraid it's all I can give you right now.

Anyway, I just wanted to touch base with you all quickly on my way to work and say thank you for making yesterday great. It really was.

The movie Outlander to be released on DVD only

We've heard rumors that Sophia Myles' new movie, Outlander, was having distribution problems. Now, several entertainment outlets are reporting that the film will be released directly to DVD. No theatrical release. I was looking forward to seeing her on the big screen again :( Right now, the Outlander DVD release date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18th, 2008.

The Outlander blog has posted that the film might get a limited release. Usually, that means just to theaters in New York City and/or Los Angeles.

Since it looks like we won't be seeing it at our local theaters, here is the Outlander movie poster. Click on the image above for a larger version of the photograph.

Poll ~ Mick St John vs Edward Cullen

There is a poll up on YouChoose asking for our votes ~ Which Vampire would you rather watch, Mick St John (Moonlight) or Edward Cullen (Twilight)? I am going to see Twilight when it comes out. Robert Pattinson is nice looking. However, he simply does not compare to Alex O'Loughlin. Mick is sensual, gorgeous, strong, intelligent, sexy... and that voice... velvety, deep and manly! *swoon*

Note : The piece mentions Sophia working on a film called Buddha's Little Finger. However, I have heard from several sources that she is no longer involved with this movie project.

CBS Adopts 'Moonlight' Actor, Cast Members Pursue Other Projects

While some have already packed their bags and tidied up their camp sites following the campaign to bring Moonlight back to CBS, quite a number of fans are still clamoring for the return of the much-loved series which starred Alex O’Loughlin and Sophia Myles. The series, which only survived a season with a little under an average of 7.5 million viewers, was cut by CBS earlier this year because the network claimed that the ratings weren’t sufficient enough for a renewal. Moreover, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler admitted that unlike Jericho, the resurrected series with a passionate fanbase, Moonlight’s fans tend to support the actor behind it rather than the series itself.

"The response to Moonlight was actually more actor-centric, so I think it certainly measures our decision on the show," Tassler told reporters at the TCA last month.

Apparently CBS saw the potential in the Australian actor and has signed him on for a one-year deal (which includes CBS’ sister studios CBS Paramount and ABC Studios) which will have him playing the central character in the new series currently being developed by producer Mark Gordon, whose credits include Grey’s Anatomy, Army Wives and Criminal Minds. Moreover, the deal will also provide O’Loughlin with a few movie projects with CBS Films.

O’Loughlin will soon be appearing in the feature film Whiteout, while his Moonlight co-star Sophia Myles appeared in the recently released Outlander, in which she played Viking warrior princess Freya, who battles extraterrestrials. The film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival. Currently, Myles is working on the film Buddha’s Little Finger, which is set to be released next year.

As for Moonlight co-star Jason Dohring, who played Mick St. John’s 400-year-old best buddy, he says that he is currently in the process of landing other acting projects.

"More recently since I’ve been done with Moonlight, I’ve sorted some stuff out in my career, just personally about where I want to go," Jason Dohring said in an interview with the Review Times last month. "I think that I worked out a couple things for myself, kind of what I want to create in the world with being a celebrity."

He adds that he would like to try taking the lead in the next project that comes his way. He explains, "It was like all of a sudden I realized I could do it and I was like excited to try to do that, be a leading man. And I saw the amount of good that you can do, that you can use that platform to effect change in the world and that was exciting to me."

Moonlight & Jericho top list of genre shows with stable ratings

They were both unceremoniously canceled by CBS, but while the audiences for "Jericho" and "Moonlight" weren't vast, they were stable.

The two shows topped a list of 13 programs tracked through Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research over the 2007-08 season, showing they maintained the strongest audiences in terms of stability.

"Jericho" had a stability index rating of 92.9, according to SyFy Portal, while "Moonlight" had a stability index rating of 87.9. The numbers, which show the amount of audience retained based on the show's highest overnight rating versus its average, is meant to give a snapshot look of how much audience on average a show retained throughout the course of the season.

The two index numbers come despite "Moonlight" finishing seventh and "Jericho" 11th among the network shows tracked by SyFy Portal in terms of average overnight ratings. "Jericho," over the course of seven episodes, only witnessed a 16.7 percent total audience drop-off between its best viewership night and its worst viewership night, while "Moonlight's" audience eroded by 19 percent over 16 episodes. "Jericho" finished with an average overnight rating of a 3.9 rating/7 share, while "Moonlight" averaged a 5.1/9.

"Lost," which topped network genre shows for the 2007-08 season with a 7.7/12, finished in the middle of the pack when it came to holding on to its audience. Its stability index rating was an 81.1 that included a total loss of 26.3 percent of its audience between its highest and lowest ratings. It finished behind "Dexter" and "Heroes" to take a seventh ranking.

The CW showed solid stability in its numbers as well. "Supernatural" had a stability index rating of 86.4 to have the third best rating among the shows tracked by SyFy Portal, which included a 27.3 percent audience drop-off. "Smallville" was right behind with an 83.9 stability index rating.

"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" had the worst rating of the 13 shows, picking up just a 50.5 that included a 59.5 percent audience erosion between its highest and worst ratings. At the same time, "Sarah Connor" also had its series premiere right after a highly rated NFL postseason game which artificially inflated its numbers for the premiere, with its second week providing more stable ratings.

"Sarah Connor" finished fourth among shows based on average overnight ratings with a 5.6/9 behind "Lost," "Heroes" and ABC's "Pushing Daisies."

Advertisers typically are looking for shows that have dependable audiences to help justify spending money on commercials, and typically shows with stable ratings have a chance to move on. Of course, that is just one of a number of factors that go into the decision-making on whether or not a show is renewed, as was evidenced by the fact that both "Jericho" and "Moonlight" were cancelled. However, seven of the top 10 shows in the stability index rating have been picked up for the 2008-09 season, leaving out "Journeyman" as the only other show with a 69.5 rating.

Of the top 10 shows based on average overnight rating, only six are returning for another season.

Release date for Twilight movie moved up to November 21st

Since the latest Harry Potter film (and the Half-Blood Prince) premiere has been switched to Summer 2009, their old November 21st, 2008 spot was available. Twilight is grabbing the date.... moving up its movie theater debut from December to November. We like sooner better than later :)

In the ever-evolving fall release schedule, Summit Entertainment's highly anticipated adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer teen vampire romance novel "Twilight" has moved from its Dec. 12 perch to Nov. 21, the date just vacated by Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

"When Warner Bros. decided to move 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' to the summer of 2009, we saw a unique opportunity to slot in our film which has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the past several months," Summit's Rob Friedman said.

Striking a respectful tone, Friedman added, "We by no means are trying to fill the shoes of the incredible Potter franchise for 2008, rather we are just looking to bring the fans of Stephenie Meyer's incredible book series the film as soon possible from a programming perspective."

In this video, TV Week's Josef Adalian interviews Nina Tassler (President of CBS Entertainment) at the Television Critics Association Tour. The chat took place before the official announcement of Alex O'Loughlin's talent holding deal.

When asked about keeping Alex, she says "Nothing concrete. We've talked to him in the past. I have a great relationship with him. But, its someone we hold in very high regard. So, its someone I'd like to work with... absolutely."

Nina, again, states that she loves Vampire shows.

"Message to Moonlight fans ~ .... I'm incredibly grateful and appreciative... They're loyal and passionate... We can not dismiss how passionate and enthusiastic fans are about their favorite tv characters and about their tv shows. So, I'm totally fine with their passion and enthusiasm."

Nina Tassler also talks about the Fall strategy for CBS, CSI and William Petersen (Grissom) leaving the series, Swingtown, etc. The Alex & Moonlight portion begins around the 3:16 mark of the video.

CBS is taking another bite at the idea of a series featuring "Moonlight" star Alex O'Loughlin.

The network has signed Mr. O'Loughlin to a talent holding deal, according to a person familiar with the situation. CBS will try to develop a series built around the actor or, if that's not possible, cast him in another project in the works at the network.

CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler had signaled her intent to sign Mr. O'Loughlin to a deal back in July during the TV Critics Association press tour. One person familiar with negotiations said the broad outlines of an agreement had been in place for weeks.

"Moonlight" attracted modest ratings but a fiercely loyal fan base, particularly online. It's unclear whether news of Mr. O'Loughlin's potential return to prime time will mollify the hurt feelings of those fans, many of whom have been unsparing in their criticism of CBS over the decision to cancel the show.

A CBS Corp. spokesman declined comment when asked about the talent deal last week.

As part of the deal, whatever project CBS develops will be produced via CBS Paramount and ABC Studios in conjunction with producer Mark Gordon.

A number of sources are reporting that Moonlight’s Alex O’Loughlin has signed a talent holding deal with CBS. What this means is that the network will attempt to develop a new series for Alex and /or cast him in another project. Obviously, the first of the two would be the better option, but fans are saying why not just bring back Moonlight? Since Alex was the show, why bother creating something new when something old will do?

As much as I love Moonlight, I’m happy to see Alex sticking around for another shot at anything on TV. Too often actors get one go of it and that’s the end of that. I could totally handle him as a PI in a 40’s Noir drama, or maybe as a lifeguard in a Baywatch remake (I’m going for the ’shirt off’ aspect.) What ever it is, I hope it’s action packed and I hope its soon.

I can't decide if this is good news or bad news. Moonlight star Alex O'Loughlin is staying at CBS.

Unless you've been in another galaxy for the past year, you know that the Aussie actor cultivated an enormous fan base with his role as vampire P.I. Mick St. John on CBS' Moonlight. The uproar caused by the cancellation of the show in May can still be heard, well, in another galaxy.

At the Television Critics Association press tour in July, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the popularity of Moonlight was due in large part to O'Loughlin's fan base. So I can appreciate the fact that CBS wants to keep him around. But it's what they'll do with him that has me worried.

Under the one-year talent holding deal, O'Loughlin will star in a new series project for CBS to be developed by producer Mark Gordon, whose ABC Studio-based company is behind such series as ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Lifetime's Army Wives, and CBS' Criminal Minds.

It'll make my blood curl if they saddle him with some wimpy Grey's Anatomy-type show. I'm not dissing the show - I'm a huge fan, even during its crummiest seasons. But I'd hate to see O'Loughlin land in some milquetoast ensemble show when he clearly has the chops to headline a unique, fresh series.

You know, like Moonlight. Now if they could just create a show like that for him to star in...

The Australian actor has signed a talent holding deal with the network, sister studio CBS Paramount TV and ABC Studios.

Under the one-year pact, O'Loughlin will star in a new series project for CBS that will be developed by top TV producer Mark Gordon, whose ABC Studio-based company is behind such series as ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," Lifetime's "Army Wives" and CBS' "Criminal Minds."

O'Loughlin rose to prominence this past season as vampire PI Mick St. John on CBS' "Moonlight." He helped attract a passionate fan base to the ill-fated freshman drama, which was canceled in May. At the Television Critics Assn. press tour in July, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler credited the show's intense fan appeal to the actor. Under the new deal with CBS, he also will be able to pitch theatrical projects to CBS Films.

O'Loughlin, who next appears in the feature "Whiteout," is repped by ICM and June Cann Management.
